Summers in Rio are hot and humid, and heavy storms can flood streets and cause landslides on the hillsides, especially from December to March. In that heat, a pet's body needs cooling within a few hours, so use ice packs wrapped in a towel near the belly and back and keep the room as cool as possible. Traffic through the tunnels between zones can be slow, so plan collection times with that in mind.
Rio is squeezed between mountains and sea, and the way you live depends on where: apartment towers in the South Zone, houses and older buildings in the North Zone, gated condominiums in Barra da Tijuca, and hillside communities with steps instead of streets. Tell any provider exactly where your pet is, including stairs, lifts and whether a car can reach the door, because collection in Rio is often shaped by access rather than distance.
Apartment living changes the logistics more than most people expect. If you're in a high-rise, ask the provider to bring a stretcher or padded carrier, check whether your building has a service lift and let the concierge know someone is coming. Cremation in Brazil, and what it means for dog owners
In Brazil, where only about 9%[1] of people are cremated, pet crematories can be further apart than in high-cremation areas. That can mean a longer wait for the ashes or a mileage charge for collection. It doesn't mean worse care. Ask your vet which crematory they work with, how far away it is and whether they collect on set days, so you know what to expect before you agree.

How Rio de Janeiro's weather affects the first few hours
Wherever you are, the rule is the same: keep your dog cool, indoors and out of direct sun until they're collected. In warm weather, ask for collection within the day. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can make home burial impossible until spring.

Rules for pets after death are usually simple, but they're set at more than one level: Brazil, then your city, county or council, and sometimes a homeowners' association or landlord. The strictest one applies. If you're thinking about a home burial, check all of them; if you're choosing cremation, the rules mostly affect where you scatter the ashes afterwards.
In Brazil, private pet crematoria operate in most large cities, some with a farewell room, and many vets can arrange collection. Ask whether the cremation is individual with the ashes returned, the price for your dog's weight and whether collection from your home is included. Confirm everything in writing before you agree.
Step by step in Rio de Janeiro
- Tell children the truth in simple words: your dog has died and won't come back. With young children, avoid "put to sleep", which can make bedtime frightening.
- Let each child choose whether to say goodbye, without pushing them toward either answer. Stroking the dog one last time, or leaving a picture they've drawn, can help.
- Give them a small job, such as picking out which toy or blanket will travel with your dog.
- Arrange the vet visit or collection for a time when children who'd rather not watch can be with a trusted adult.
- Explain what happens next in plain terms: the dog is going to be cremated, and the ashes come back in a special box.
