How old is your dog in human years, and are they a senior yet?

Size changes everything. US giant breeds live about 9.51 years[1] on average, small breeds about 13.53 years[2]. Pick your dog's size and age to see their human-year equivalent and life stage.

Using the calculator

Choose a size, enter an age, read the stage

The calculator opens on a medium dog aged 8. Use the Your pet menu to pick the size group that fits your dog: toy (like a Chihuahua), small (under about 20 lb), medium (about 20 to 50 lb), large (about 50 to 90 lb) or giant (over 90 lb). Enter their Age in years; half years are fine. The tool shows an "in human years" figure, a life stage (young, adult, senior or geriatric), and the typical life expectancy for that size with its source. The same menu also lists cats, horses, small mammals, birds, reptiles and fish, handy if your dog shares the house with other animals.

For mixed breeds, go by adult weight rather than looks. A 55 lb shepherd mix belongs in the large group even if their face says otherwise.

The method

Why the old "times seven" rule doesn't work for dogs

Dogs grow up fast, then age at different speeds depending on size. The calculator counts a dog's first year as about 15 human years and the second as about 9 more, so every two-year-old dog is roughly 24. After that, each dog year adds 4 human years for toy and small dogs, 5 for medium, 6 for large and 7 for giant breeds.

Life stage comes from real lifespans. Using US life tables built from Banfield clinic records, a dog is marked senior from about three-quarters of their size group's life expectancy, and geriatric once they reach it. The figures for each size are:

Medium12.7 years9.5 years12.7 years
Large11.5 years8.6 years11.5 years
Giant9.5 years7.1 years9.5 years

12.69 years[3]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

11.51 years[4]

Large-breed dogs in the US have a life expectancy of about 11.5 years.

13.36 years[5]

Toy-breed dogs in the US have a life expectancy of about 13.4 years.

Examples

Worked example: the same birthday, three very different dogs

Picture three dogs who all turned eight this spring. A Beagle (small) comes out at about 48 in human years and is still an adult; she won't be marked senior until she's past ten. A Labrador (large) is about 60 and close to the senior line. A Great Dane (giant) is about 66 and already a senior, because giant breeds reach their life expectancy years earlier.

By our calculation, small-breed dogs in the US outlive giant breeds by about 4.0 years[6]. That gap is why a Great Dane owner might sensibly start thinking about senior care around the age a Beagle owner is still booking agility classes.

What "senior" and "geriatric" mean for you and your dog

Senior is a signal to book twice-yearly vet checks, watch for stiffness, weight change and cloudy eyes, and adjust exercise. It's also a sensible time to learn what aftercare options exist near you, simply so nothing has to be decided in a rush later.

Geriatric means your dog has reached or passed the typical lifespan for their size. Many dogs have good years left at this stage. It's a time for comfort, favorite walks, and honest conversations with your vet about quality of life. Our page on quality of life and saying goodbye explains the signs vets look for.

Worth knowing

What an age calculator can't tell you about your own dog

Averages hide a lot of variation. Breed matters within each size: in a large UK study of breed lifespans, Labradors and Border Collies reach a median of 13.1 years[7], while flat-faced breeds tend to live shorter lives. Weight matters too; obese dogs live about 1.47 years[8] less than dogs kept at a healthy weight. Genetics, neutering, care and luck all play a part.

So treat the stage as a prompt, not a prediction. Plenty of 15-year-old Jack Russells are still stealing socks. The calculator can't assess your dog's health; only your vet can do that.

Planning gently

If your dog is a senior: small steps worth taking now

  • Ask your vet what a good day and a bad day look like for your dog's conditions.
  • Decide, roughly, whether you'd want a goodbye at home or at the clinic, and read about coordinating an in-home goodbye.
  • Use the memorial budget planner to see likely costs, so money isn't a shock later.
  • Take paw prints, photos and videos while your dog is well and happy.

Our guide to pre-planning dog aftercare walks through the rest. If you'd like options on file, send us a note and mention that you're planning ahead. Questions people ask

At what age is a dog considered a senior?

It depends on size. Using US life expectancy data, giant breeds reach senior age around 7, large breeds around 8 or 9, medium dogs around 9 or 10, and small and toy breeds around 10. Your vet may use slightly different cut-offs, especially for breeds with known health issues.

Is one dog year really seven human years?

No. Dogs mature much faster in their first two years, reaching roughly the equivalent of a 24-year-old person by age two. After that, small dogs age more slowly and giant dogs faster. The calculator uses size-specific rates instead of a single multiplier.

How long do Labradors live?

In UK primary-care data, Labradors had a median lifespan of about 13 years, close to Border Collies. US data for large breeds overall, which include many heavier dogs, show a lower average of about 11.5 years. Keeping a Lab lean is one of the most effective things you can do for a longer life.

Why do big dogs die younger than small dogs?

Researchers don't fully agree, but large and giant breeds seem to age faster once they're adults, with earlier onset of cancers, joint disease and heart problems. It's the opposite of the pattern across species, where bigger animals like elephants usually live longer than small ones.

Should I start planning aftercare when my dog becomes a senior?

There's no rule, but many owners find it easier to learn the options while their dog is still well. It doesn't need to be a big project: knowing whether you'd want private cremation, where a home goodbye would happen, and roughly what it costs is enough to take pressure off later.
