Free tools for the practical side of losing a dog

When your head is full, numbers help. A dog returns roughly 3-5% of body weight[1] as ashes, and prices climb with size, so a few quick calculations can save you from the wrong urn or a surprise bill.

  • Nine free tools, nothing saved
  • Built around your dog's size
  • Every range shows its source

Free tools for the practical side of losing a dog

Before you start

Which dog aftercare tool should you open first?

Every tool here works in your browser, needs no account and shows its result as you type. Nothing is saved or sent anywhere. Most of them start from one number, your dog's weight, so have a rough figure ready. The last vet invoice usually lists it.

  • Deciding what to do: start with the aftercare comparison, then the cost calculator.
  • Choosing an urn or keepsakes: the ashes weight estimator, urn size calculator and sharing planner work as a set.
  • Planning for an older dog: the age calculator, budget planner and farewell planner.
  • Afterwards: the grief check-in, whenever you want it.

Price

Cremation cost calculator: a realistic range for your dog

Enter your dog's weight, where you live and the type of cremation, then tick any extras such as home pickup or a clay paw print. You get a low-to-high total and a line-by-line breakdown. It uses published US weight bands and UK vet-group averages, so the answer reflects size rather than one flat figure. The national private average is about $260[2], but a Great Dane can cost well over that. More detail on the cost calculator page.

Choosing

Aftercare options compared: private, communal, water or burial

Slide the priorities that matter to you, like keeping ashes, cost, a smaller environmental footprint or a ceremony, and the tool ranks five options with honest pros and cons. It's a good first stop if you haven't decided between cremation and burial yet. The aftercare options comparison page explains how the ranking works.

Ashes

Ashes weight estimator: how much will come home?

Enter your dog's body weight and the ashes weight estimator shows the likely range of cremated remains, plus an everyday comparison so the number means something. A 50 lb Springer mix returns roughly the weight of a large bag of flour; a toy breed may return just a few ounces, which can be a shock if you're not expecting it. The ashes weight estimator page explains the 3 to 5 percent rule behind it. The percentage isn't guesswork: a forensic study that weighed the remains from 100 human cremations found they averaged about 3.5% of adult body weight, and dogs land in a similar band.

Urns

Urn size calculator: pick an urn that actually fits

The urn size calculator turns weight into cubic inches and milliliters, adds a margin for safety and suggests a standard size from small to extra large. A Labrador's ashes need about five times the space of a Yorkie's, which surprises many owners. Try the urn size calculator before you order anything engraved. By our estimate, a median giant-breed dog of about 108 lb needs an urn of roughly 108 cubic inches[3], far bigger than most shelf urns sold for pets.

Sharing

Ashes sharing planner: a fair portion for everyone

When grown children, a partner and a grandparent all want something to keep, the ashes sharing planner divides your dog's ashes between keepsake urns, pendants, rings and a scattering tube, then shows what's left for the main urn. It stops you ordering six keepsakes for a dog whose ashes would fill twenty. Open the sharing planner to split them fairly.

Senior dogs

Pet age calculator: where your dog is in their senior years

The pet age calculator converts your dog's age to a human equivalent and shows their life stage by size. It matters, because, in a large study of US clinic records, giant breeds average about 9.51 years[4], while the overall average is 12.69 years[5]. A seven-year-old Bernese and a seven-year-old Beagle are in very different places. See the pet age calculator for the size bands it uses.

Money

Memorial budget planner: every cost on one list

The memorial budget planner adds up each likely cost, from euthanasia and pickup to an urn, paw print or garden stone, with low and high amounts you can edit. If money is a worry, you're in large company: most US owners in one study said aftercare costs concerned them. Start with the memorial budget planner and copy the total into your notes.

The goodbye

Farewell planner: a simple plan for the day itself

The farewell planner helps you sketch who'll be there, where it happens, and any small ritual such as a last walk, a candle, a letter or a favorite song. You finish with a printable checklist. Having even a rough plan tends to make the day feel less rushed. The farewell planner page has ideas for families with children.

Afterwards

The grief check-in: two quiet minutes for you

Six gentle statements, agree or disagree, and a short, non-clinical summary of where you seem to be, with ideas that match. It isn't a diagnosis. Grief for a dog often starts before the loss: in a large RSPCA survey of bereaved owners, 75.4%[6] of owners felt anticipatory grief while their pet was still alive. The grief check-in is there whenever you'd like to use it.

Being honest

What the tools can't tell you

A calculator can't see your local crematory's price list, whether it offers witnessed cremation or how busy it is this week. The ranges come from national studies, and your town may sit above or below them. Use the tools to set expectations and spot a quote that looks far off, then ask us for real local options or read our overview of dog cremation services.

Questions people ask

Are these dog cremation calculators accurate?

They're as accurate as the published data behind them, which means they give realistic ranges rather than exact quotes. Cost figures come from national US studies and UK regulator data, and ash estimates use the common 3 to 5 percent of body weight rule. Your local provider's price list is the final word.

Do the tools save my information?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing you type is stored or sent to us. If you close the page, the numbers are gone. If you'd like help from a person, use the contact form separately, and only then do we see the details you choose to share.

Which tool should I use if my dog has just died?

Start with the cremation cost calculator so you know what a fair price looks like before you agree to anything. If you plan to keep the ashes, use the urn size calculator next. Everything else can wait for a calmer day.

What if my dog is a mixed breed and I don't know their weight?

Use your closest guess, or the weight on the last vet record. The tools only need a rough figure, and a difference of five or ten pounds rarely changes the recommended urn size or the price band. For a giant mix, round up rather than down.
