Dog Cremation in Normandy: what to know
Across the 1 Normandy communities we cover, the same few questions come up again and again: how fast can my dog be collected, what does private cremation really cost, and how will I know the ashes are my dog's? The answers differ more between a big city and a small town than between one corner of Normandy and another, so read this overview, then your own city's page.
If you're reading this because your dog is old or unwell, you're already doing something kind: planning ahead. In Normandy, one phone call to your vet or a crematory now can settle the big questions, so that when the time comes you can focus on your dog instead of logistics. The guides below cover every community we serve in Normandy.

How Normandy thinks about cremation
About 44.91%[1] of people in Normandy are cremated, lower than in much of the country. You may find that older relatives expect a burial and younger ones assume cremation. Talk it through if you can, but remember it's your household's decision. Some families do both: cremation first, then a small burial of the ashes with a marker, so there's still a place to visit and tend.
ICI (France Bleu), citing the Fédération française de crémation (2023) publishes the Normandy rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
Dog cremation prices for Normandy families
In much of Europe, the vet who puts your dog to sleep also arranges collection by a pet crematorium, and that fee is added to your vet bill. It's convenient, but you're free to call a crematorium in or near Normandy yourself. Ask whether they offer individual cremation, whether you can be present and how long it takes: in Sweden, for example, AniCura says ashes normally come back in 2-4 weeks[2].
Some European pet insurers contribute to cremation: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement[3], for example. In Germany, collective cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[4]. Before you pay in Normandy, check your policy and ask the crematorium for a written price for your dog's weight, including any charge for collection from your home or vet.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | €85 to €205 | €165 to €375 |

Local rules in Normandy
Most of what happens after a dog dies is up to you, but not quite all of it. In Normandy, as elsewhere, rules come into play when you want to bury a body or scatter ashes somewhere other than your own garden. If your plan is a private cremation and an urn on a shelf, there's almost nothing to check. If it involves digging or scattering, the points below are worth a minute.
In France, your vet will usually offer incinération collective or individuelle. Individual cremation returns your dog's ashes; collective doesn't. Prices rise with weight, so give your dog's approximate weight when you ask.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Say goodbye in your own way. Nobody is waiting on you. Plenty of families spend an hour or two beside their dog.
- Make a keepsake if you'd like one. A paw print must be taken before cremation.
- Contact a provider yourself, or let your vet make the call. Or we can send you local options by email.
- Arrange collection at a time that suits you, and tell the provider about stairs, lifts or a large dog.
- Choose private or communal, and ask for written confirmation of which one it is.
- Plan where the ashes will go. There's no deadline on this one; the urn can stay on a shelf for months if that's what you need.
Remembering your dog in Normandy
If you'd like a paw print, ask before the cremation, because it can't be done afterwards. It's a small extra: by our estimate, paw-print add-ons at US crematories cost about $32 at the median[6]. A clay impression, an inked nose or a few tufts of fur sealed in an envelope with the date can end up meaning more to your family in Normandy than an expensive urn.

Questions people ask
Is dog cremation common in Normandy?
For people, about 44.91%[1] of deaths in Normandy end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among families who want to keep their dog close, cremation is now the most common choice, especially in towns and suburbs.
How much does dog cremation cost in Normandy?
Prices across Normandy depend mostly on your dog's size and whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade. Big-city providers can charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
Do I need a permit to have my dog cremated in Normandy?
No. Families don't need a permit to have a dog cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your dog's body at home or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part before you go ahead.
Can I bury my dog at home in Normandy?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the state or country rules. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your dog with you wherever you go.
What if my dog dies while we're traveling in Normandy?
Contact the closest clinic or emergency animal hospital; staff there can check your dog and keep them in cold storage while you think. You can then use a crematory near where you are and ask for the ashes to be sent home by tracked delivery, or drive your dog home in a cool car if the distance is short. The city pages below describe local conditions across Normandy to help you decide.
Should I get a second quote for dog cremation in Normandy?
If time allows, yes. Prices for the same private cremation can differ noticeably between providers in Normandy, especially once collection and the urn are added. Ask each for a written, itemized total for your dog's weight. If it all feels like too much right now and you'd rather not shop around, going with your vet's usual provider is a perfectly reasonable choice.
