Saying goodbye to your dog in Stuttgart

Stuttgart, Baden-Wurttemberg

Where to start in Stuttgart

In Germany, dedicated pet crematoria and pet cemeteries are well established, so families around Stuttgart can choose between cremation with ashes returned, a grave in a pet cemetery, or in some cases burial on their own land. Rules on garden burial depend on the local authority and water protection zones, so check with your municipality before digging. Very small pets, such as a hamster or budgie, are the case where garden burial is most often considered.

Stuttgart sits in a steep basin, with apartment buildings climbing the hillsides and stairways, called Stäffele, linking streets. Carrying a larger pet, or even a heavy cage or terrarium, down several flights is hard when you are upset, so when you ask for aftercare options, mention your floor, any lift and how close a car can park. Collection from the home saves a difficult journey.

If your dog is being cared for at an emergency or specialty hospital in Stuttgart, aftercare is usually arranged from there, sometimes with a different crematory from the one your regular vet uses. You can ask for your dog to be transferred to the provider you prefer; it just takes a phone call.

Stuttgart is home to about 635,000 people, the largest of the 5 Baden-Wurttemberg communities we cover.

Nearby, we also have local pages for Karlsruhe (39 miles), Heidelberg (49 miles) and Mannheim (59 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.

Cremation in Germany: why it matters for your dog

With about 76.0%[1] of people in Germany choosing cremation, you'll rarely need to explain your decision to anyone here. It also shapes what's on offer: providers in high-cremation areas tend to stock a wider range of urns, keepsake jewelry and witnessed cremation, because families ask for them. Use that choice. Ask to see the full range before you pick, rather than accepting the first urn on the list.

We take the Germany rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Stuttgart, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.

Heat, cold and collection times in Stuttgart

Weather matters most in the first day. If it's warm where you are in Stuttgart, keep your dog indoors in the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and ask for collection within the day. If it's cold, you have a little more time, and an unheated room can safely hold your dog until the next morning. Either way, draw the curtains, keep other pets and young children supervised and don't feel you have to rush the goodbye.

What dog owners in Stuttgart typically pay

In Stuttgart, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium. You can also contact a crematorium directly. Ask for the price of individual (private) and collective (communal) cremation for your dog's weight.

For a line-by-line price table, see the Baden-Wurttemberg overview; for what's included in each option, see our services.

What's allowed in Baden-Wurttemberg after your dog dies

Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Baden-Wurttemberg allows. You don't need a permit to have your dog cremated, and keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole dog and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces.

In Germany, home burial is allowed on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Say goodbye in your own way. There's no rush. Many families sit with their dog for an hour or two.
  2. Make a keepsake now if it appeals. After cremation, a paw print is no longer possible.
  3. Contact a provider yourself, or let your vet make the call. Or we can send you local options by email.
  4. Arrange collection at a time that suits you, and tell the provider about stairs, lifts or a large dog.
  5. Choose private or communal, and ask for written confirmation of which one it is.
  6. Plan where the ashes will go. You don't have to decide now; the urn can sit on a shelf for as long as you need.

Ways to remember your dog locally

Summers in the Stuttgart basin can be hot and close, because the surrounding hills trap warm air on still days. If your pet dies in summer, cool the body quickly with towels and cool packs, and keep the room shaded. In winter you have more time, but it still helps to choose a pet cremation or cemetery option within a day or two.

The services page is the place to compare what is included, the planning tools turn your pet's details into figures, or compare your instinct with the poll results, look through our guides and the blog. Questions people ask

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Stuttgart?

Usually yes. Karlsruhe is about 39 miles away, Heidelberg is about 49 miles away and Mannheim is about 59 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Why does the Stuttgart page quote a human cremation rate?

Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 76.0%[1] of Germany residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.

What's the difference between private and communal cremation?

In a private cremation your dog is cremated alone and the ashes returned are only theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and ashes aren't returned; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Private typically costs about twice as much.

Is there a 24-hour emergency vet in Stuttgart that can help after my dog dies?

Large cities like Stuttgart usually have at least one emergency hospital open around the clock. If your dog dies at home overnight, you can call them for advice, and many will receive your dog, confirm the death and keep them in a cold room until a crematory collects. There's usually a fee for this. You don't have to choose the type of cremation that night.

Who should I tell after my dog dies in Stuttgart?

Start with your vet, so reminders stop and their records are closed. Then contact your microchip registry, your pet insurer if you have one and, if your dog was licensed or registered, the local office that issued it. Groomers, walkers and daycare will appreciate a short message too. Doing it all in one sitting spares you painful reminders arriving weeks later.

Do I need a vet to confirm my dog has died?

It isn't usually required, but it can be reassuring if you're unsure, especially after a sudden death. Your vet or an emergency clinic can confirm it and then arrange collection for cremation at the same time.
