Most of what happens after a dog dies is up to you, but not quite all of it. In Bavaria, as elsewhere, rules come into play when you want to bury a body or scatter ashes somewhere other than your own garden. If your plan is a private cremation and an urn on a shelf, there's almost nothing to check. If it involves digging or scattering, the points below are worth a minute.
In Germany, home burial is allowed on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking.
If it's happening now: a short plan
- Tell children the truth in simple words: your dog has died and won't come back. With young children, avoid "put to sleep", which can make bedtime frightening.
- Let each child choose whether to say goodbye, without pushing them toward either answer. Stroking the dog one last time, or leaving a picture they've drawn, can help.
- Give them a small job, like choosing the blanket or toy that goes with your dog.
- Arrange the vet visit or collection so that any child who would prefer not to be there can spend that time with an adult they know well.
- Explain what happens next plainly: your dog will be cremated and come home in a special container.
- Plan a small memorial together once the ashes are back, such as planting a shrub or filling a memory jar.
Honoring your dog after the cremation
