What North Rhine-Westphalia allows: burial, scattering and more
Renters and homeowners in North Rhine-Westphalia face different questions. If you rent, your lease and landlord decide whether anything can be buried in the yard, and the answer is usually no. If you own, local ordinances and any homeowners' association or building rules sit on top of what North Rhine-Westphalia allows. Cremation needs nobody's permission, and the ashes can go wherever you move next.
In Germany, home burial is allowed on your own land with at least 50 cm of soil cover, outside water-protection areas. Pet crematoria (Tierkrematorium) offer individual (Einzeleinäscherung) and collective cremation; ask which one you're booking.

- Tell children the truth in simple words: the dog has died and isn't coming home. Steer clear of "put to sleep" with little ones, since it can turn bedtime into something scary.

- Give them a small job, such as picking out which toy or blanket will travel with your dog.
- Arrange the vet visit or collection for a time when children who'd rather not watch can be with a trusted adult.

- Plan a small memorial together when the ashes have come home. A shrub in the garden or a jar of memories both work well.

Why does the Cologne page quote a human cremation rate?

There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Cologne?
