Saying goodbye to your dog in Jakarta

Jakarta, Indonesia

Dog aftercare in Jakarta: the local picture

Greater Jakarta is enormous, from apartment towers in the center to dense kampung neighborhoods and gated housing estates in the surrounding cities, and traffic can turn a short trip into hours. That makes home collection valuable. When you ask for options, give your area, whether you live in an apartment or a house, and how a car can reach you, so collection can be timed around the roads.

Cats are especially popular in Jakarta, alongside birds, fish, rabbits and many other pets. Families here come from many faiths, and attitudes to cremation differ: some prefer burial, while others are comfortable with cremation. There's no right answer. If you have a garden, burial may be possible; if you live in an apartment, cremation with ashes returned is often the practical choice.

Timing is where a large city like Jakarta can catch you out. Mobile vets are in heavy demand on evenings and weekends, so if you want a goodbye at home, try to book several days out and ask whether the vet will wait until the collection team arrives. Some in-home services send their own driver; others hand over to a crematory. Knowing which one you'll get avoids an anxious gap where nobody is sure who's coming.

Jakarta is home to about 10,560,000 people.

$260[1]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for private dog cremation at $260 (range $206-$473).

3-5% of body weight[2]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

What local cremation habits mean for you

Whatever the local customs around human funerals, dog cremation has become the most common choice for families who want to keep their dog close. The key questions in Jakarta are practical ones, and they're the same everywhere: private or communal, cost, timing and paperwork.

Planning around the weather in Jakarta

Local weather affects two things: how quickly your dog should be collected, and whether a burial or scattering outdoors is practical. Your provider in Jakarta will know the seasons well, so ask them what they'd recommend at this time of year.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it

In Jakarta, private cremation is the usual choice for families who want their dog's ashes, and many providers offer a short farewell ceremony as part of the package. Ask exactly what's included before you compare prices.

Rules worth knowing in Indonesia

Pet crematories themselves are lightly regulated in many places, so it's up to you to ask good questions about identification and private cremation. What rules in Indonesia mostly cover is what happens next: where a dog can be buried and where ashes can be scattered. The notes below cover the main points; your vet or local council can confirm anything specific to your address.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. If your dog dies while you're away from home, find the nearest vet or emergency clinic first. They can confirm the death and hold your dog while you decide.
  2. Decide whether to bring your dog home or cremate where you are. Cremating locally and having the ashes sent on is often easier than a long drive.
  3. If you drive your dog home, keep the car cool, lay a blanket underneath and avoid long stops in warm weather.
  4. Ask a local crematory if the ashes can be shipped by a tracked service that needs a signature, and how much extra that costs.
  5. Check before crossing a border. Moving a dog's body between countries can involve paperwork; ashes are usually far simpler to carry, though airlines set their own rules for urns.
  6. Tell your own vet when you're back in Jakarta so they can update your dog's records and stop reminders.

Small ways to keep your dog's memory close

Jakarta is hot and humid all year, and during the rainy season, usually heaviest around January and February, floods can close streets for days. A pet's body needs cooling within a few hours in this climate: wrap it in a towel, place ice packs near the belly and back, and keep the room air-conditioned. If floodwater is rising, tell any provider straight away, as it may change how and when they can reach you.

Questions people ask

Will a pet collection team come to an apartment building in Jakarta?

Yes. Collection services in big cities regularly work in apartment buildings and high-rises. Tell them the floor, whether there's a service elevator, where they can park and whether building staff need notice. For a larger dog, ask for two people and a stretcher. Many families find it more private to arrange collection at a quieter time of day.

What's the difference between private and communal cremation?

In a private cremation your dog is cremated alone and the ashes returned are only theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and ashes aren't returned; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Private typically costs about twice as much.

Is there a 24-hour emergency vet in Jakarta that can help after my dog dies?

Large cities like Jakarta usually have at least one emergency hospital open around the clock. If your dog dies at home overnight, you can call them for advice, and many will receive your dog, confirm the death and keep them in a cold room until a crematory collects. There's usually a fee for this. You don't have to choose the type of cremation that night.

Can someone collect my dog from home in Jakarta?

Yes. Most pet crematories and many vets in and around Jakarta offer home collection, sometimes out of hours for an extra fee. Tell them your dog's approximate weight, whether there are stairs or a lift, and the best time to come, so they can send the right number of people.

How long until I get my dog's ashes back in Jakarta?

Many families get their dog's ashes back within one to two weeks. In a large city it can be quicker; in a smaller town where the cremation happens in a regional centre like Jakarta, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.

How much ash will I get back from my dog?

Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of your dog's body weight[2], so a 30 kg (66 lb) dog typically leaves about 0.9 to 1.5 kg[4]. For urns, a common rule of thumb is one cubic inch of space per pound of body weight. Our urn size calculator does the math for your dog.
