What Otago allows: burial, scattering and more
You don't need a permit to have your dog cremated, but what you do afterwards, burying them at home or scattering their ashes in a park, can be governed by local rules. Here's what applies in Otago.
In New Zealand, councils set the rules on home burial and many urban properties are too small for it, so cremation is common. Ask your vet which crematorium they use and whether individual cremation is confirmed in writing.
What to do when your dog dies in Queenstown
- Book the appointment for a slot that works for each person who'd like to be present, and find out if a home visit is possible.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, rather than being handed the question while you're upset. The usual choices are a private cremation, a communal one or burial at home.

- Prepare a quiet space with your dog's bed, a blanket and a few favorite treats.

Ways to remember your dog locally
Specialist pet aftercare is spread thinly across the southern South Island, so some Queenstown families find that services are based elsewhere in Otago or Southland. That is worth knowing in advance: ask how collection works over the distance, how long ashes take to come back, and whether your vet can hold your pet in the meantime. Renters should also check their lease before thinking about a backyard burial.
