In a private cremation your dog is cremated alone and the ashes returned are only theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and ashes aren't returned; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Private typically costs about twice as much.
How do I know I'm getting my own dog's ashes back?
Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your dog from collection through cremation and comes back with the ashes, along with a certificate.
