Dog Cremation in Seoul

Seoul, South Korea

Dog Cremation in Seoul: what to know

Nearly every one of our 2 Seoul communities offers the same basic menu: private cremation with the ashes returned, communal cremation without, and home burial where land and local rules allow. What changes from place to place is the price, the distance and the waiting time. If you've never done this before, start with the page for your own city, then come back here for the wider picture.

Dog owners across Seoul face the same hard moment, but the practical steps can differ a lot between a downtown apartment and a farm at the end of a long road. Use this page for the regional picture, then open your own city below for local weather, costs and pickup advice.

We cover 2 communities in Seoul, from Seoul and Gangnam.

The local attitude to cremation

Local habits matter in small ways. Where about 92.43%[1] of people are cremated, as in Seoul, relatives are less likely to raise an eyebrow at an urn on the mantelpiece and more likely to have one themselves. Some families keep a dog's ashes so they can one day be scattered or buried alongside a person. If that's something you'd like, ask about the rules for the cemetery or place you have in mind, as they vary.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Seoul rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

What dog owners in Seoul typically pay

Hong Kong shows how much prices move with weight: one provider lists basic individual cremation at about HKD 1,300 for a small pet and HKD 3,000 for a 20 to 30 kg dog[2], rising to HKD 6,000 for dogs over 50 kg[3]. Wherever you are, give your dog's weight when you ask Seoul providers for quotes, and check whether collection and the return of the ashes are included.

Pet funeral customs in Asia are often more elaborate than in the West, and prices reflect that: a simple cremation may be modest, while a full funeral with a ceremony and columbarium niche costs considerably more. The table shows published examples from the region.

Checking the rules in Seoul before you decide

You don't need a permit to have your dog cremated, but what you do afterwards, burying them at home or scattering their ashes in a park, can be governed by local rules. Here's what applies in Seoul.

In South Korea, burying a pet yourself is generally not allowed, and licensed pet funeral facilities handle cremation, often with a short farewell ceremony and a choice of urns or memorial stones. Some facilities are outside the cities, so ask about collection. Get the price for your dog's weight and a clear list of what the package includes.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Say goodbye in your own way. Nobody is waiting on you. Plenty of families spend an hour or two beside their dog.
  2. Make a keepsake now if it appeals. After cremation, a paw print is no longer possible.
  3. Contact a provider yourself, or let your vet make the call. Or we can send you local options by email.
  4. Arrange collection for whenever works for you, and mention up front any steps, an elevator or a heavy dog.
  5. Choose private or communal, then get it stated in writing so there's no doubt later.
  6. Plan where the ashes will go. You don't have to decide now; the urn can sit on a shelf for as long as you need.

Remembering your dog in Seoul

Many Seoul families scatter some of their dog's ashes on a favorite walk and keep the rest at home. If you'd like to scatter in a park or public space, check the rules first and choose a quiet, respectful spot. A small keepsake urn or a pendant means everyone in the family can keep a little.

Questions people ask

How long does it take to get my dog's ashes back in Seoul?

Many families receive their dog's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where dogs travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.

Should I get a second quote for dog cremation in Seoul?

If time allows, yes. Prices for the same private cremation can differ noticeably between providers in Seoul, especially once collection and the urn are added. Ask each for a written, itemized total for your dog's weight. If it all feels like too much right now and you'd rather not shop around, going with your vet's usual provider is a perfectly reasonable choice.

How many communities do you cover in Seoul?

We currently have local dog cremation guides for 2 communities in Seoul, including Seoul and Gangnam. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how pickup usually works there.

Can I bury my dog at home in Seoul?

Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the state or country rules. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your dog with you wherever you go.

Can a vet come to my home for euthanasia anywhere in Seoul?

In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and many also arrange cremation afterwards. In rural parts of Seoul, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may be willing to visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask. Book as early as you can, as diaries fill up.

Do I need a permit to have my dog cremated in Seoul?

No. Families don't need a permit to have a dog cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your dog's body at home or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part before you go ahead.
