Dog Cremation in Northern Ireland

Northern Ireland, the United Kingdom

Dog Cremation in Northern Ireland: what to know

Across Northern Ireland, the part of dog aftercare that varies most isn't the cremation itself, it's the journey: how far the crematory is from your door, how often it collects from your area and who brings the ashes back. In Belfast that trip may take minutes. In outlying towns it can be a scheduled weekly run. Your own city's page below explains what to expect there.

Whether you're in one of the larger cities like Belfast or a small town, the questions to ask are the same: is it private, how is my dog identified, what's the total price in writing and when will the ashes come home? This guide explains the local picture for Northern Ireland, and each city page goes deeper.

Local habits around cremation and burial

In areas like Northern Ireland, with a human cremation rate of about 24.2%[1], pet cemeteries are often more visible than pet crematories, and some run a cremation service as well. If you've driven past one, it's worth a call even if you don't want a burial. Ask whether they cremate on site, what they charge for a private cremation at your dog's weight, and whether they collect from vets.

The cremation figure for Northern Ireland comes from Federation of Burial and Cremation Authorities (FBCA) death & cremation statistics (2024). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Pricing dog cremation in Northern Ireland, line by line

The CMA found that only 52%[2] of UK cremation buyers remembered being given price information, and just 2%[3] of the vet websites it checked listed cremation prices. Under the CMA's 2026 remedies, vets are required to offer a communal option and set out their prices[4], so in Northern Ireland it's reasonable to ask for a written list. Independent crematoria publish dog prices from about £182.50 for a small dog to £275 for an extra-large one[5].

UK prices are well documented thanks to the Competition and Markets Authority's recent review. Individual cremation through the large vet groups had a median of about GBP 249.47[6] for a dog, while independent crematoria often publish lower prices for the same size. It can pay to ask your vet which crematorium they use and compare.

What's allowed in Northern Ireland after your dog dies

Renters and homeowners in Northern Ireland face different questions. If you rent, your lease and landlord decide whether anything can be buried in the yard, and the answer is usually no. If you own, local ordinances and any homeowners' association or building rules sit on top of what Northern Ireland allows. Cremation needs nobody's permission, and the ashes can go wherever you move next.

In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority has pushed vets to show cremation prices and offer a communal option, so it's reasonable to ask for a price list. You can also contact an independent pet crematorium directly; many publish prices online and collect from home.

  • Burial at home: Confirm the rule for the actual parcel and proposed burial with the local authority and property owner.
  • Scattering ashes: Ask the exact land manager about scattering before making arrangements; a general gathering permission is a separate matter.
  • Who oversees it: the authority responsible for the specific activity and location; this guide does not identify a universal permit or licensing rule
  • Worth knowing: Record the service method, release authority, identification and return instructions in writing.

A city's population does not establish which aftercare activities are allowed at an address. Check the actual site and activity before proceeding.

What to do when your dog dies in Northern Ireland

  1. If your dog dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning unless you want to. Move your dog to a cool room and cover them with a sheet.
  2. Put a towel or puppy pad underneath. It's normal for a dog's bladder or bowels to release after death.
  3. Gently curl your dog into a natural sleeping position during the first hours, while the body is still soft. Both the lifting later and the goodbye itself are easier that way.
  4. In the morning, call your vet or one of the crematories covering Northern Ireland. Give them a rough weight for your dog and say where your dog is now.
  5. Ask for the price in writing, and make sure it covers the pickup, whichever cremation type you've chosen and the container the ashes arrive in.
  6. Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar now, ahead of pickup, if a keepsake would mean something.
  7. Write down the expected return date for the ashes, along with the name of whoever will get in touch once they're back.

Ways to remember your dog locally

Many Northern Ireland families scatter some of their dog's ashes on a favorite walk and keep the rest at home. If you'd like to scatter in a park or public space, check the rules first and choose a quiet, respectful spot. A small keepsake urn or a pendant means everyone in the family can keep a little.

Questions people ask

Is dog cremation cheaper in small towns in Northern Ireland?

Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can add up quickly. City providers offer more choice and faster service, sometimes at a premium. Compare written totals rather than assuming either way.

How long does it take to get my dog's ashes back in Northern Ireland?

Many families receive their dog's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where dogs travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.

How do UK cremation prices compare between vets and independent crematoria?

The CMA found individual dog cremation through the large vet groups had a median of about GBP 249.47[6], while independent crematoria published prices from £182.50 for a small dog to £275 for an extra-large dog[5]. Across Northern Ireland, it's worth asking your vet which crematorium they use and comparing it with one or two independents.

How much does dog cremation cost in Northern Ireland?

Prices across Northern Ireland depend mostly on your dog's size and whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade. Big-city providers can charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.

How many dog-owning households are there in Northern Ireland?

Across the 1 communities we cover in Northern Ireland, we estimate about 58,500 households have a dog. That's the sum of our per-city estimates, based on population, household size and national dog-ownership rates. It leaves out rural areas outside those communities, so the true total is higher.

Can a vet come to my home for euthanasia anywhere in Northern Ireland?

In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and many also arrange cremation afterwards. In rural parts of Northern Ireland, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may be willing to visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask. Book as early as you can, as diaries fill up.
