Who handles dog aftercare in Edinburgh
Much of Edinburgh lives in tenements and flats, often up several flights of a common stair without a lift. That is worth mentioning when you ask for options, because carrying a pet down narrow stone stairs and finding somewhere to park in Marchmont, Leith or the New Town takes planning. If you would rather bring your pet in yourself, ask where you can drop off and whether someone can meet you at the car.
The City of Edinburgh Council removes animals found dead on pavements, verges and other public places, but it does not uplift or dispose of pets that belong to someone. Apartment living changes the logistics more than most people expect. If you're in a high-rise, ask the provider to bring a stretcher or padded carrier, check whether your building has a service lift and let the concierge know someone is coming. What local cremation habits mean for you
A high cremation rate, about 74.5%[3] for people in Scotland, also means some local funeral homes offer pet cremation themselves or partner with a pet crematory. That can be a comfortable route if your family already knows a funeral director. Ask them what you'd ask any provider: where the cremation physically takes place, whether your dog will be the only animal cremated at that time, and the expected return date.

Planning around the weather in Edinburgh
Wherever you are, the rule is the same: keep your dog cool, indoors and out of direct sun until they're collected. In warm weather, ask for collection within the day. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can make home burial impossible until spring.

Rules worth knowing in Scotland
Most of the decisions after a dog's death are yours to make. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Scotland and your local council or city may regulate.

In the UK, the Competition and Markets Authority has pushed vets to show cremation prices and offer a communal option, so it's reasonable to ask for a price list. You can also contact an independent pet crematorium directly; many publish prices online and collect from home.

What to do first, and what can wait
- If your dog dies at the clinic, nothing about aftercare has to be settled before you walk out. The team can hold your dog in the clinic's cold room for a while so you can think.
- Ask for time alone with your dog before anything else, somewhere quiet. Even on a full day, most Edinburgh clinics will find you a room.
- Ask which crematory the clinic uses and what private and communal cremation cost for your dog's weight.
- Take the collar home with you, and see if the nurses are able to press a paw print or clip a little fur for you.
- Call back within a day or two to confirm your choice. If you'd rather use a different provider, they can collect from the clinic.
- Ask how the ashes will come back: delivered to your home, returned to the clinic or collected from the crematory.
Remembering your dog in Edinburgh

What's the difference between private and communal cremation?
