Tamarac, Florida
Dog aftercare in Tamarac: the local picture
August highs in Tamarac reach around 91F, and January lows are about 58F, so a body left in a warm room will change quickly in any month. Close the blinds, set the thermostat low, and place your pet on a waterproof pad with ice wrapped in cloth. Book collection for the same day. When a tropical system is heading for Broward, call earlier rather than later.
Tamarac began in the 1960s as a retirement community and still has many older residents, though younger families have moved into its newer neighborhoods. Owners here usually keep the ashes, often on a shelf facing the canal or golf course out back. Some later scatter a little by the water. A fair question for any provider is how they keep one pet's ashes separate from another's.
If your dog is old or ill and you live in or near Tamarac, a phone call now is easier than one later. Ask your vet which crematory they use, what private cremation costs for your dog's weight, how long the ashes take to come back and whether a home visit is possible. Having those answers written down means that when the day comes, you can spend it with your dog instead of on the phone.
Tamarac's population is around 74,134, the 43rd-largest of the 235 Florida communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Tamarac are based about 24 miles away in Hialeah, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
For a second opinion on price, Sunrise (2 miles), North Lauderdale (2 miles) and Lauderhill (3 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Tamarac routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.

What local cremation habits mean for you
Cremation is the norm in Florida: about 72.5%[3] of people who die there are cremated. That familiarity carries over to pets. Most people here already know what a private cremation is, local crematories are well established and families rarely feel they have to explain why they want their dog's ashes home.
The Florida percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Tamarac, not as a count of pets.
Tamarac weather and timing
Hot summers in places like Tamarac can bring storms, hurricanes or wildfire smoke, and with an elderly or seriously ill dog it's worth having a plan before the season starts. Keep your dog's medical records on your phone, know which emergency vets sit outside the likely evacuation area, and ask your regular vet what would happen if your dog died while you were away from home. It's not a pleasant conversation, but it's far easier now than mid-evacuation.
In the hottest months (May, June, July, August, September and October), don't leave your dog outside or in a car, even briefly. If there'll be a delay before collection, wrap your dog in a blanket with frozen water bottles or ice packs around (not under) the body. Most crematories and vets in hot places are used to this and can collect quickly.

Budgeting for your dog's cremation
Where you live in the US moves the price. In-home euthanasia for a dog averages $364 in Texas but $572 in Massachusetts[5], and pet care spending runs well above average in some metros and below it in others. In Tamarac, use the weight-based ranges below as a guide, and ask local providers for a written total rather than relying on a national average.
By our math, Tamarac loses roughly 1,250 dogs a year. At the national private-cremation average of $260[4], that's a market of about $0.3 million, big enough that asking two providers for a quote usually pays off.

What Florida allows: burial, scattering and more
Renters and homeowners in Florida face different questions. If you rent, your lease and landlord decide whether anything can be buried in the yard, and the answer is usually no. If you own, local ordinances and any homeowners' association or building rules sit on top of what Florida allows. Cremation needs nobody's permission, and the ashes can go wherever you move next.
The official Florida local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Tamarac.
The Florida page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Tamarac's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your dog dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning unless you want to. Move your dog to a cool room and cover them with a sheet.
- Put a towel or puppy pad underneath. It's normal for a dog's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your dog into a natural sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes lifting, and the goodbye, easier.
- In the morning, call your vet or one of the crematories covering Tamarac. Give them a rough weight for your dog and say where your dog is now.
- Ask for the price in writing, including collection, private or communal cremation and the container for the ashes.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes and who will contact you when they're ready.
Honoring your dog after the cremation
Tamarac is a Broward County city about 24 miles north of Hialeah, stretched along Commercial Boulevard and University Drive and built largely around golf courses, canals and lakes. It has many 55+ condo and villa communities alongside newer family neighborhoods. Association rules generally forbid digging on common ground, so burial is rarely possible. Mention your community and building and any guard gate instructions when you call.

Questions people ask
How do Florida attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Florida human cremation rate at about 72.5%[3]. We show it on the Tamarac page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
How does Tamarac's weather affect dog aftercare?
August is the hottest month in Tamarac, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Winters are mild, with average lows staying above freezing, so outdoor burial or scattering is usually possible year round.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Tamarac?
Usually yes. Sunrise is about 2 miles away, North Lauderdale is about 2 miles away and Lauderhill is about 3 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Roughly how many dogs die in Tamarac each year?
Our estimate is around 1,250. It comes from Tamarac's population (about 74,134), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog (about 15,500 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Can I take my dog to the crematory myself?
Often, yes. Many crematories accept dogs brought in by their families, and it can save a collection fee. Call first to agree a time. Lay your dog on a blanket in the back of the car with a towel underneath, and drive straight there. Some families find this last drive meaningful; others would rather someone else handles it, and both are fine.
Do crematories charge extra to collect from a rural address near Tamarac?
Some do. Many providers include collection within a set distance and charge per mile beyond it, or add a flat fee for remote or out-of-hours trips. Ask for the collection price separately when you get a quote. If the fee is high, taking your dog to your vet or meeting the provider partway are common ways to reduce it.
