Star, Idaho
Who handles dog aftercare in Star
Star is a small but fast-growing city on the Boise River at the western edge of Ada County, about 16 miles from downtown Boise, with part of it reaching into Canyon County. What was farmland along State Highway 44 is now new subdivisions, with older homes and acreages scattered between them. Services based in Boise, Meridian or Nampa may cover Star; confirm whether your street falls inside their standard area before booking.
Many families moved to Star for more room, and pets here often have big fenced yards and views of the foothills. When a companion dies, people tend to want to keep them near that home. Cremation offers that without the permanence of a grave, which matters in a place where families may move on as the area grows. An urn can go wherever the family goes next.
Distance is the thing to ask about in and around Star. A crematory in a larger center such as Boise may cover your address, but some charge by the mile beyond a set radius, and a single out-of-hours trip can add a noticeable amount. If you can drive your dog yourself, to the vet or to a meeting point partway, you can often avoid that fee. Ask for the collection price on its own line so you can decide.
About 20,874 people live in Star, which makes it the 13th-largest of the 13 Idaho communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Star are based about 16 miles away in Boise, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.
The closest communities we cover are Eagle (4 miles), Meridian (8 miles, a larger centre) and Caldwell (9 miles, a larger centre). Providers serving those towns often travel to Star too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
4,450
How many dog-owning households Star has (estimate)
How we calculated this
20,874 ÷ 2.5 = 8,350 households; × 53% (dog) = 4,450. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate
350
Estimated dog losses in Star each year
How we calculated this
4,450 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 350 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation in Idaho: why it matters for your dog
A high cremation rate, about 71.2%[3] for people in Idaho, also means some local funeral homes offer pet cremation themselves or partner with a pet crematory. That can be a comfortable route if your family already knows a funeral director. Ask them what you'd ask any provider: where the cremation physically takes place, whether your dog will be the only animal cremated at that time, and the expected return date.
The Idaho figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Planning around the weather in Star
Because Star swings between 92°F summers and freezing winters, ask any provider how their timings change by season. Some collect faster in summer because heat makes it urgent; others slow down in winter when rural roads ice over. Knowing a provider's seasonal pattern tells you whether to plan a home goodbye for a particular week, or leave a little more slack in the calendar.
Star gets both extremes: hot summers (around 92°F in July) and freezing winter lows in January, February, March, November and December. In summer, speed matters, so keep your dog cool and ask for prompt collection. In winter, you have a little more time, but frozen ground can rule out a home burial until spring.

What dog cremation costs in Star
Most Star families pay somewhere in the ranges below. A private cremation for a medium-size dog usually lands in the low hundreds; communal is roughly half. Home euthanasia, if you want it, is a separate cost: about $410[5] on average nationally, compared with $139[6] in a clinic.
Multiply it out: roughly 350 dogs a year in Star (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of $260[4] is about $0.1 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.

Before you bury or scatter in Idaho
It helps to separate two sets of rules in Idaho: those for a whole body and those for ashes. Burying a dog's body usually comes with conditions on where and how, mainly to protect groundwater and wells. Ashes are treated far more lightly almost everywhere, because they're dry, sterile bone mineral. That's why many families who want a grave to visit choose cremation first and then bury the urn.

Start with the Idaho rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Star's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Your next steps, one at a time
- Say goodbye in your own way. There's no rush. Many families sit with their dog for an hour or two.
- Make a keepsake now if it appeals. After cremation, a paw print is no longer possible.
- Contact a provider yourself, or let your vet make the call. Or we can send you local options by email.
- Arrange collection for whenever works for you, and mention up front any steps, an elevator or a heavy dog.
- Choose private or communal, then get it stated in writing so there's no doubt later.
- Plan where the ashes will go. There's no deadline on this one; the urn can stay on a shelf for months if that's what you need.
Small ways to keep your dog's memory close
Star gets real summer heat, with July highs around 92, and winter nights stay below freezing from November into March. If a pet dies on a hot day, keep them indoors on a soft blanket in a room with the blinds drawn and air conditioning on. In the cold months, a garage or covered porch keeps the body cool enough until you are ready to call.

Questions people ask
How many dog owners live in Star?
By our estimate, about 4,450 households in Star have at least one dog, and around 350 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 20,874, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Why does the Star page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 71.2%[3] of Idaho residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Star?
January, February, March, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 92°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Will I have to travel to Boise to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Boise (roughly 16 miles from Star) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Does pet insurance pay for dog cremation?
Usually not under a standard policy, although euthanasia may be covered when it's medically necessary[8]. Some insurers sell add-ons that help: one reimbursed up to $250 toward cremation and burial[9], and another up to $500 for end-of-life costs[10]. Check your policy or call your insurer before you pay a provider in Star.
Are there enough pet crematories to serve Star?
By our estimate, around 350 dogs die in Star each year, from roughly 4,450 dog-owning households. Not every family chooses cremation, but demand on that scale supports several options in most regions. The number of providers physically in Star matters less than how many collect from your address and how quickly they return the ashes.
