West Chicago, Illinois
Your dog's aftercare options around West Chicago
The Illinois Prairie Path crosses West Chicago, and the DuPage forest preserves around town mix restored prairie, woods and ponds. Families who'd like to leave ashes on preserve ground need the district's approval first, since it controls what's allowed there. Otherwise, a sunflower patch along the garage, a potted hibiscus on the front step or a small box atop a dresser needs no approval from anyone.
West Chicago began as a railroad junction on the prairie, and today it's a DuPage County city of about 25,000 some 30 miles from the Loop, home to a large Latino community. Older bungalows and frame houses cluster around downtown and the Metra tracks, and newer subdivisions spread north and west. If Spanish would make the conversation easier for your family, ask each provider whether someone on their team speaks it.
Families in and around West Chicago often combine local and regional help: the goodbye happens at home or with the local vet, and the cremation itself takes place in a larger centre such as Chicago. If you want a witnessed cremation, ask early, because it may mean a drive.
With roughly 25,296 residents, West Chicago is the 89th-largest of the 151 Illinois communities we cover. Chicago, roughly 30 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover West Chicago run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Carol Stream (5 miles), St. Charles (5 miles) and Bartlett (5 miles) are close enough that their providers cover West Chicago routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
5,350
Estimated dog-owning households in West Chicago
How we calculated this
25,296 ÷ 2.5 = 10,118 households; × 53% (dog) = 5,350. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
420
Estimated dog losses in West Chicago each year
How we calculated this
5,350 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 420 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
60.2%[3]
The NFDA projected Illinois's cremation rate at 60.2% for 2024.
$260[4]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for private dog cremation at $260 (range $206-$473).
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Burial, cremation and tradition in Illinois
Cremation now covers roughly 60.2%[3] of human deaths in Illinois, so most families have been to both a burial and a cremation service. A dog's aftercare can turn into a family conversation, with opinions on both sides. One way to settle it: ask where each person would want to remember the dog in five years' time. If the answer is a particular place, burying the ashes there can satisfy everyone.
The Illinois figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
How West Chicago's weather affects the first few hours
Power cuts and heating failures during West Chicago's cold months (January, February, March, November and December) can catch families out when an elderly dog needs warmth. Keep a thick bed off the floor, a spare blanket and a plan for somewhere warm to go. If your dog dies during a long cold spell, a chilly room works in your favor: you can wait for the roads to clear and for the right provider without any rush.
Winter weather in West Chicago can make travel slow, and rural collection routes are often the first to be postponed when roads ice over. The upside of cold is time: in an unheated garage or porch that stays near freezing, your dog can wait a day or two for collection. Wrap them in a blanket, lay them on a board or in a sturdy box and make sure other animals can't get to them.

Budgeting for your dog's cremation
Where you live in the US moves the price. In-home euthanasia for a dog averages $364 in Texas but $572 in Massachusetts[5], and pet care spending runs well above average in some metros and below it in others. In West Chicago, use the weight-based ranges below as a guide, and ask local providers for a written total rather than relying on a national average.
A back-of-envelope figure for West Chicago: about 420 dogs lost each year, times the national private average of $260[4], comes to roughly $0.1 million. Our estimate, and a reason prices vary from provider to provider.

Burial and scattering rules for Illinois
Most of the decisions after a dog's death are yours to make. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Illinois and your local council or city may regulate.
Not sure which office covers West Chicago? The Illinois local government directory is the official list.
The Illinois page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. West Chicago's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- Book the appointment for a slot that works for each person who'd like to be present, and find out if a home visit is possible.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, rather than being handed the question while you're upset. The usual choices are a private cremation, a communal one or burial at home.
- Ask the vet to arrange collection, or let them know the name of the crematory you've already picked.
- Prepare a quiet space with your dog's bed, a blanket and a few favorite treats.
- Settle paperwork and payment first if you can, so there's nothing to sign afterwards.
- Stay as long as you need after your dog has died. No one is going to rush you out.
- Check the written confirmation while the team is still there: cremation type and the date the ashes are due back.
Remembering your dog, in West Chicago and beyond
Expect July afternoons near 84 in West Chicago, January lows about 16, and frost that can start in November and stay through March. When a cat, cavy or finch dies in humid weather, carry it downstairs or into a shaded bedroom, cradle it in an old sweatshirt, and nestle sealed bags of ice around it, then line up collection within a day. In January and February, a shut garage does the chilling on its own.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Illinois?
For people, yes: about 60.2%[3] of Illinois deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in West Chicago follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve West Chicago actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Chicago, about 30 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for West Chicago and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Which nearby towns can I compare with West Chicago?
The closest communities we cover are Carol Stream (about 5 miles), St. Charles (about 5 miles) and Bartlett (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve West Chicago too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Does the West Chicago climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 84°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
How much ash will I get back from my dog?
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of your dog's body weight[7], so a 30 kg (66 lb) dog typically leaves about 0.9 to 1.5 kg[8]. For urns, a common rule of thumb is one cubic inch of space per pound of body weight. Our urn size calculator does the math for your dog.
Do crematories charge extra to collect from a rural address near West Chicago?
Some do. Many providers include collection within a set distance and charge per mile beyond it, or add a flat fee for remote or out-of-hours trips. Ask for the collection price separately when you get a quote. If the fee is high, taking your dog to your vet or meeting the provider partway are common ways to reduce it.
