Holland, Michigan
Who handles dog aftercare in Holland
Holland State Park, with its red lighthouse at the channel to Lake Michigan, and the beaches of Lake Macatawa are places families cherish, but scattering on state or public land may need permission, so ask first. Many Holland households keep the urn at home. Homeowners with bigger lots in the townships sometimes bury a small companion beneath a tree in the yard.
Holland's winters bring steady lake-effect snow, though the downtown sidewalks are famously heated to melt it. At home, if your companion dies while a storm keeps the roads closed, an unheated mudroom or basement will keep the body cool, resting on a blanket with ice sealed in bags. In humid midsummer, when the lake breeze dies down, arrange collection that day.
In Holland, your vet is probably the person who will arrange most of this. Small-town practices often have a standing agreement with one crematory and a regular collection day, which keeps costs down for everyone. If your dog dies between collections, the clinic will usually keep them in a cold room until the van comes. Ask how long that might be and whether you can send something with your dog, like a blanket or a favorite toy.
With roughly 35,372 residents, Holland is the 32nd-largest of the 63 Michigan communities we cover. Grand Rapids, roughly 25 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Holland run from there.
The closest communities we cover are Saugatuck (9 miles), Wyoming (22 miles, a larger centre) and Walker (23 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Holland too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
7,500
Estimated dog-owning households in Holland
How we calculated this
35,372 ÷ 2.5 = 14,149 households; × 53% (dog) = 7,500. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
590
Estimated dog losses in Holland each year
How we calculated this
7,500 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 590 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.
53%[1]
53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
69.5%[3]
The NFDA projected Michigan's cremation rate at 69.5% for 2024.
$260[4]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for private dog cremation at $260 (range $206-$473).
We built the this numbers from CareCredit (Synchrony) and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

The local attitude to cremation
Faith and family custom can shape this choice more than cost. In Michigan, a place where cremation accounts for about 69.5%[3] of human deaths, families whose congregation leans towards burial live alongside families who have cremated for generations. If faith matters to you, ask your minister or a community elder how others have marked a pet's death. Many families find a few words at a small gathering means a lot, whichever option they choose.
That Michigan rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Holland only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
How Holland's weather affects the first few hours
Local weather affects two things: how quickly your dog should be collected, and whether a burial or scattering outdoors is practical. Your provider in Holland will know the seasons well, so ask them what they'd recommend at this time of year.

Dog cremation prices for Holland families
By our estimate, private cremation gets cheaper per pound as dogs get bigger: roughly $9 a pound for a 15 lb dog, about $4.20 at 60 lb and around $4 at 100 lb[5]. So a large dog costs more in total, but not in proportion to its size. When you compare Holland quotes, check which weight band your dog falls into; a dog just over a band line can tip into the next price.
By our math, Holland loses roughly 590 dogs a year. At the national private-cremation average of $260[4], that's a market of about $0.2 million, big enough that asking two providers for a quote usually pays off.
The Michigan price table breaks costs down by size; our services page explains what sits behind each line.

What Michigan allows: burial, scattering and more
Rules for pets after death are usually simple, but they're set at more than one level: Michigan, then your city, county or council, and sometimes a homeowners' association or landlord. The strictest one applies. If you're thinking about a home burial, check all of them; if you're choosing cremation, the rules mostly affect where you scatter the ashes afterwards.

A simple checklist for the next two days
- While your dog is still comfortable, find out from your vet who handles their cremations and roughly what a private one would cost for a dog your size.
- Use our [cost calculator](/tools/cremation-cost-calculator) to get a sense of the budget, and follow up by requesting written quotes from a provider or two around Holland.
- Decide where you'd like the goodbye to happen. Some families choose the clinic, others their living room, so ask if your vet does home visits.
- Choose private or communal ahead of time, then note the decision beside the vet's number where you'll find it.
- Think about keepsakes now. Photos, a paw print in ink or a lock of fur set aside are all simpler to organize before the day comes.
- Tell the people who'll want to be there, so nobody learns afterwards that they missed the chance.
- Keep the plan somewhere easy to find, so that on the day, whoever is in the house can follow it.
Memorials and keepsakes for your dog
Holland sits at the head of Lake Macatawa, a few miles in from Lake Michigan, about 30 miles southwest of Grand Rapids and split between Ottawa and Allegan counties. Settled by Dutch immigrants in 1847, it still shows that heritage in its tidy neighborhoods of older frame homes near Hope College, with newer subdivisions spreading into Holland and Park townships. Lakeshore aftercare providers serve the whole area.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Holland?
Usually yes. Saugatuck is about 9 miles away, Wyoming is about 22 miles away and Walker is about 23 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Holland page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 69.5%[3] of Michigan residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How many dog owners live in Holland?
By our estimate, about 7,500 households in Holland have at least one dog, and around 590 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 35,372, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Where are the providers that serve Holland actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Grand Rapids, about 25 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Holland and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is pet cremation regulated in Michigan?
By one directory's count, only nine US states have laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[7], and as of 2026 just two require written documentation to be given to owners[8]. Whether or not Michigan is one of them, ask any provider how they identify your dog, whether private means your dog is alone in the chamber, and for all of it in writing.
How do I know I'm getting my own dog's ashes back?
Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your dog from collection through cremation and comes back with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your dog is alone in the chamber, as some providers use partitioned cremation with several animals separated. Get the answer in writing.
