Portage, Michigan
Who handles dog aftercare in Portage
A surprising amount of Portage is water: West Lake, Austin Lake, Long Lake and several smaller lakes are ringed with homes, and Portage Creek runs north through the Celery Flats area. Summers are humid, and a pet that dies on a July afternoon needs to be kept somewhere shaded and air-conditioned, resting on a towel with frozen packs alongside, until the collection arrives.
Portage borders Kalamazoo on the south, a Kalamazoo County city of about 50,000 laid out along Westnedge Avenue, with I-94 across its northern end. It grew mostly after the 1960s, so the housing leans toward ranch homes, split-levels and newer cul-de-sac subdivisions, plus apartments near the Crossroads shopping area. Providers that cover the Kalamazoo area treat Portage as part of their regular route.
Distance is the thing to ask about in and around Portage. A crematory in a larger center such as Grand Rapids may cover your address, but some charge by the mile beyond a set radius, and a single out-of-hours trip can add a noticeable amount. If you can drive your dog yourself, to the vet or to a meeting point partway, you can often avoid that fee. Ask for the collection price on its own line so you can decide.
With roughly 49,862 residents, Portage is the 25th-largest of the 63 Michigan communities we cover. Grand Rapids, roughly 53 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Portage run from there.
Portage sits within easy reach of Kalamazoo (5 miles), Battle Creek (20 miles) and Elkhart (40 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Portage; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.
Our estimate
10,500
Portage: dog-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
49,862 ÷ 2.5 = 19,945 households; × 53% (dog) = 10,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
830
Portage families who lose a dog each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
10,500 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 830 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
69.5%[3]
The NFDA projected Michigan's cremation rate at 69.5% for 2024.
$260[4]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for private dog cremation at $260 (range $206-$473).
We built the this numbers from American Pet Products Association (APPA) 2025 State of the Industry and CareCredit (Synchrony), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

What local cremation habits mean for you
Cremation now covers roughly 69.5%[3] of human deaths in Michigan, so most families have been to both a burial and a cremation service. A dog's aftercare can turn into a family conversation, with opinions on both sides. One way to settle it: ask where each person would want to remember the dog in five years' time. If the answer is a particular place, burying the ashes there can satisfy everyone.
That Michigan rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Portage only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.
What the seasons mean for aftercare in Portage
Winter weather in Portage can make travel slow, and rural collection routes are often the first to be postponed when roads ice over. The upside of cold is time: in an unheated garage or porch that stays near freezing, your dog can wait a day or two for collection. Wrap them in a blanket, lay them on a board or in a sturdy box and make sure other animals can't get to them.
Portage winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February, March, November and December. That gives you a little more time after a death in winter, but it also means frozen ground. If you were hoping to bury your dog at home, you may not be able to dig until spring, which is one reason many local families choose cremation.

How much to budget in Portage
By our estimate, private cremation gets cheaper per pound as dogs get bigger: roughly $9 a pound for a 15 lb dog, about $4.20 at 60 lb and around $4 at 100 lb[5]. So a large dog costs more in total, but not in proportion to its size. When you compare Portage quotes, check which weight band your dog falls into; a dog just over a band line can tip into the next price.
Multiply it out: roughly 830 dogs a year in Portage (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of $260[4] is about $0.2 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.

What Michigan allows: burial, scattering and more
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Michigan before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in.
Michigan keeps an official directory of local governments; use it to reach the county or city office that covers Portage.
Start with the Michigan rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat Portage's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
What to do when your dog dies in Portage
- If your dog dies at the clinic, nothing about aftercare has to be settled before you walk out. The team can hold your dog in the clinic's cold room for a while so you can think.
- Ask for time alone with your dog before anything else, somewhere quiet. Even on a full day, most Portage clinics will find you a room.
- Ask which crematory the clinic uses and the price of both private and communal cremation for a dog the size of yours.
- Take the collar home with you, and ask the nurses whether they can make a paw impression or save some fur.
- Call back within a day or two with your decision. Should you prefer another provider, that provider can pick your dog up from the clinic.
- Ask how the ashes will come back: delivered to your home, returned to the clinic or collected from the crematory.
Memorials and keepsakes for your dog
Many Portage households own their homes on decent-sized lots, and some choose a quiet spot near the garden shed or under a maple for a small companion. Lakefront owners are wise to pick a place well back from the shoreline. Others prefer cremation and an urn on the shelf. Portage's paved trails and parks are well used, but public land needs permission before any scattering.

Questions people ask
Does the Portage climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 82°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Will I have to travel to Grand Rapids to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Grand Rapids (roughly 53 miles from Portage) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Portage?
Usually yes. Kalamazoo is about 5 miles away, Battle Creek is about 20 miles away and Elkhart is about 40 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How many dog owners live in Portage?
By our estimate, about 10,500 households in Portage have at least one dog, and around 830 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 49,862, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Who should I tell after my dog dies in Portage?
Start with your vet, so reminders stop and their records are closed. Then contact your microchip registry, your pet insurer if you have one and, if your dog was licensed or registered, the local office that issued it. Groomers, walkers and daycare will appreciate a short message too. Doing it all in one sitting spares you painful reminders arriving weeks later.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation?
In a private cremation your dog is cremated alone and the ashes returned are only theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and ashes aren't returned; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Private typically costs about twice as much.
