Ocean Springs, Mississippi
Getting help for your dog in Ocean Springs
Ocean Springs sits across Biloxi Bay from Biloxi, a town of live oaks, cottages and older neighborhoods around a compact, lively downtown, with newer subdivisions spreading north of I-10. Its artistic reputation and front-beach setting draw many retirees and families. Aftercare options come from along the Mississippi coast, so ask each provider about collection from your home and whether cremation is private.
The Gulf keeps Ocean Springs mild in winter, with January nights in the mid-40s, but August afternoons average about 90F and humidity rarely lets go. If your pet dies in the warm months, keep the body in the coolest room with ice packs wrapped in a thin towel, and arrange collection the same day. Hurricane season can complicate that, so keep a plan in mind.
Home burial is more common in smaller communities, especially where people have land. It's a perfectly good choice, but it's worth thinking about whether you'll stay in the property, what's under the ground and whether you'd like to be able to take your dog with you if you ever move. Cremation keeps that option open.
Ocean Springs's population is around 18,993, the 19th-largest of the 21 Mississippi communities we cover. Mobile, roughly 49 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Ocean Springs run from there.
Families in Ocean Springs often end up using a provider from Biloxi (6 miles, a larger centre), Gautier (8 miles) and Pascagoula (14 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
4,050
How many dog-owning households Ocean Springs has (estimate)
How we calculated this
18,993 ÷ 2.5 = 7,597 households; × 53% (dog) = 4,050. Multi-pet homes count once.
Our estimate

Estimated dog losses in Ocean Springs each year
How we calculated this
4,050 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 320 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How Mississippi thinks about cremation
Only about <40%[3] of people in Mississippi are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition. For dogs, that often means a spot in the garden or on family land. Cremation is still widely available, though, and many families choose it because it lets them keep their dog close even if they move.

Ocean Springs weather and timing
Heat also matters for the goodbye itself. If you're planning a home euthanasia in August, book a morning or evening appointment when the house is cooler, and ask whether the vet can arrange collection straight afterwards.
In Ocean Springs, August highs average about 90°F, and humidity can make the house feel warmer still. Heat and humidity together shorten the time you have before collection, so if your dog dies at home in summer, try not to wait until morning to make the first call. Many providers will come the same evening, or your vet can point you to an emergency clinic with a cold room.

What dog owners in Ocean Springs typically pay
US pet services prices, including vet bills, were about 42% higher in 2025 than in 2019[5], so older price lists you find online may understate what Ocean Springs providers charge today. The ranges below come from a recent cost guide. Use them to spot a quote that's far out of line, then ask for an itemized total covering collection, cremation and the urn.
Multiply it out: roughly 320 dogs a year in Ocean Springs (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of $260[4] is about $0.1 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.

Checking the rules in Mississippi before you decide
Most of the decisions after a dog's death are yours to make. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Mississippi and your local council or city may regulate.

What to do when your dog dies in Ocean Springs
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour. If your dog died at home, lay them on a towel in a cool room and close their eyes if you can.
- Take anything you want to keep now: the collar and tags, a snip of fur, an inked paw print.
- Call your vet, or the emergency clinic if it's after hours, and let them know. If you're not certain your dog has died they can confirm it, and they'll walk you through how their aftercare works.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. This is the choice that shapes everything else, including the price.
- Arrange collection from your home or the clinic, and ask for the total cost in writing.
- Choose what the ashes come home in, or accept the basic container to start with and pick an urn when you're ready.
- Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your dog, and put the lead away when you're ready, not before.
Memorials and keepsakes for your dog
Some of Ocean Springs' most familiar pet memories happen under the live oaks downtown or on the front beach at sunrise. Public beaches and the Gulf Islands National Seashore have their own rules on scattering, so check first. At home, a stone set under an oak, a hand-painted urn or a small framed sketch of your pet fits the town's creative spirit.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Ocean Springs?
Usually yes. Biloxi is about 6 miles away, Gautier is about 8 miles away and Pascagoula is about 14 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Mobile to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Mobile (roughly 49 miles from Ocean Springs) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation common in Mississippi?
For people, yes: about <40%[3] of Mississippi deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation.Green summary of CANA 2026 Annual Statistics Report (2025). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Ocean Springs follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Roughly how many dogs die in Ocean Springs each year?
Our estimate is around 320. It comes from Ocean Springs's population (about 18,993), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog (about 4,050 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Does pet insurance pay for dog cremation?
Usually not under a standard policy, although euthanasia may be covered when it's medically necessary[7]. Some insurers sell add-ons that help: one reimbursed up to $250 toward cremation and burial[8], and another up to $500 for end-of-life costs[9]. Check your policy or call your insurer before you pay a provider in Ocean Springs.
Is dog cremation more common than burial in Mississippi?
For people, about <40%[3] of deaths in Mississippi end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow similar habits. For dogs, cremation is now the most common choice among families who want to keep their pet close, especially in towns and suburbs.
