O'Fallon, Missouri
Who handles dog aftercare in O'Fallon
Fort Zumwalt Park, with its stone ruins, fishing lake and wooded paths, is a local favorite, and many O'Fallon owners have photos of an animal sprawled on the grass there. City parks aren't for scattering ashes, but a picture from the park, a flat marker among the landscaping or an urn in the family room can hold those afternoons just as well.
O'Fallon is the largest city in St. Charles County, a place that grew from a small railroad town into a sea of subdivisions along I-70 and Highway 40/64, roughly 30 miles west of downtown St. Louis. Most homes date from the 1990s onward, many with basements and fenced yards. Providers from across the St. Louis area serve O'Fallon, so ask how collection works, whether cremation is private and when the ashes come home.
One advantage of a town the size of O'Fallon is that people know each other. Your vet is likely to know the crematory staff personally and can tell you honestly how they work. Don't be shy about asking what they'd choose for their own dog.
O'Fallon is home to about 96,101 people, the 7th-largest of the 43 Missouri communities we cover. St. Louis, roughly 30 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover O'Fallon run from there.
O'Fallon sits within easy reach of Lake St. Louis (3 miles), St. Peters (6 miles) and Wentzville (8 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from O'Fallon; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation in Missouri, and what it means for dog owners
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Missouri, at about 59.8%[3], but burial still has deep roots here. You'll find both traditions among dog owners too. Neither is more "proper" than the other; what matters is what feels right for your dog and your family.
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) is where the Missouri figure comes from. It counts people; we use it because attitudes to cremating a pet in O'Fallon tend to follow attitudes to cremation generally.
Timing your dog's aftercare in O'Fallon's climate
O'Fallon winters are cold, with average lows at or below freezing in January, February and December. That gives you a little more time after a death in winter, but it also means frozen ground. If you were hoping to bury your dog at home, you may not be able to dig until spring, which is one reason many local families choose cremation.
If you're driving your dog to the vet or crematory yourself on a winter day, a cold car actually helps. Lay your dog on a blanket in the back, with a towel underneath, and drive carefully. In January, when lows average about 21°F, check the roads before you set off, and don't feel you have to go that day if conditions are poor; your dog will keep safely in the cold.

What you'll likely pay, and what adds to it
Most O'Fallon families pay somewhere in the ranges below. A private cremation for a medium-size dog usually lands in the low hundreds; communal is roughly half. Home euthanasia, if you want it, is a separate cost: about $410[5] on average nationally, compared with $139[6] in a clinic.
Here's a number you won't find elsewhere: if every one of the roughly 1,600 dogs lost in O'Fallon each year were privately cremated at the national average of about $260[4], local families would spend around $0.4 million a year. That's our estimate, and it's why several providers compete for work here.

Burial and scattering rules for Missouri
Renters and homeowners in Missouri face different questions. If you rent, your lease and landlord decide whether anything can be buried in the yard, and the answer is usually no. If you own, local ordinances and any homeowners' association or building rules sit on top of what Missouri allows. Cremation needs nobody's permission, and the ashes can go wherever you move next.
The official Missouri local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in O'Fallon.
Start with the Missouri rules, which cover burial, scattering and oversight for the whole state, and treat O'Fallon's local ordinances as a possible extra layer.
Step by step in O'Fallon
- Get help lifting. Two people are needed for a big dog, and folding a sheet or blanket into a sling is kinder on everyone, your dog included.
- Move your dog to a cool spot near the door, lying on something waterproof and covered with a blanket.
- Call a provider that can handle a big dog and give them the approximate weight, the number of steps and any tight turns.
- Ask whether they'll bring a stretcher and send two people, and check if heavier dogs cost extra.
- Confirm private or communal and the full price, including the urn, which will need to be larger for a big dog.
- Take your keepsakes now: a snip of fur, a nose print or a paw impression.
Remembering your dog, in O'Fallon and beyond
O'Fallon winters bring January nights near 21F and ground that stays frozen through much of December, January and February. A yard grave during those months is hard going, and many subdivision rules discourage one anyway, so cremation is the usual path. In a July heat spell, with highs in the upper 80s, a finished basement is often the coolest place to rest a pet's body until pickup.

Questions people ask
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in O'Fallon?
January, February and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 88°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
Will I have to travel to St. Louis to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in St. Louis (roughly 30 miles from O'Fallon) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from O'Fallon?
Usually yes. Lake St. Louis is about 3 miles away, St. Peters is about 6 miles away and Wentzville is about 8 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the O'Fallon page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 59.8%[3] of Missouri residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can my dog stay in the garage until the crematory can collect in winter?
In cold weather, a cool garage or unheated porch is a reasonable place for a day or two. Wrap your dog in a blanket, lay them in a sturdy box or on a board and make sure pets and wildlife can't reach them. If daytime temperatures climb well above freezing, call for collection sooner rather than later.
Does pet insurance pay for dog cremation?
Usually not under a standard policy, although euthanasia may be covered when it's medically necessary[8]. Some insurers sell add-ons that help: one reimbursed up to $250 toward cremation and burial[9], and another up to $500 for end-of-life costs[10]. Check your policy or call your insurer before you pay a provider in O'Fallon.
