How dog cremation works in Belgrade
Belgrade winters are cold, with December lows near 10F and frost that can arrive in October and hang on through April. With frozen soil for so many months, digging in a new-build backyard is rarely practical, and cremation tends to come first. July afternoons reach the mid-80s; on a day like that, set your pet's body on a towel in a shaded, air-conditioned room.
Belgrade is Gallatin County's second town, about 10 miles west of Bozeman on the flat valley floor, and it's where the region's main airport sits. Much of its growth has come as new subdivisions of single-family homes on former grain and hay fields. Providers based in the valley often cover both towns, so ask whether they'll collect from your house, whether a fee applies, and when to expect the ashes.
One advantage of a town the size of Belgrade is that people know each other. Your vet is likely to know the crematory staff personally and can tell you honestly how they work. Don't be shy about asking what they'd choose for their own dog.
Belgrade's population is around 13,107, the 8th-largest of the 10 Montana communities we cover.
For a second opinion on price, Bozeman (10 miles, a larger centre), Helena (69 miles, a larger centre) and Butte-Silver Bow (72 miles, a larger centre) are close enough that their providers cover Belgrade routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
2,800
How many dog-owning households Belgrade has (estimate)
How we calculated this
13,107 ÷ 2.5 = 5,243 households; × 53% (dog) = 2,800. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
220
Estimated dog losses in Belgrade each year
How we calculated this
2,800 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 220 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

How Montana thinks about cremation
In Montana, with cremation chosen for around 73.4%[3] of people, pet crematories often compete on service rather than basics. You might be offered a farewell room, same-week return or a range of containers. Take what helps and skip what doesn't. The core promise to confirm is simple: your dog is cremated individually, carries an ID tag from pickup to return, and you're given a date when the ashes will be ready.
We take the Montana rate from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Belgrade, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Planning around the weather in Belgrade
Cold months can be hard on older dogs, especially large breeds with arthritis. If your dog is struggling on icy steps or slipping on frozen paths through January, February, March, April, October, November and December, talk to your vet about comfort. If you decide on a home goodbye in winter, choose a warm room, lay out their bed and make sure the collection team has a clear, salted path to the door. Small preparations like that make the day calmer.
Winter weather in Belgrade can make travel slow, and rural collection routes are often the first to be postponed when roads ice over. The upside of cold is time: in an unheated garage or porch that stays near freezing, your dog can wait a day or two for collection. Wrap them in a blanket, lay them on a board or in a sturdy box and make sure other animals can't get to them.

Budgeting for your dog's cremation
US pet services prices, including vet bills, were about 42% higher in 2025 than in 2019[5], so older price lists you find online may understate what Belgrade providers charge today. The ranges below come from a recent cost guide. Use them to spot a quote that's far out of line, then ask for an itemized total covering collection, cremation and the urn.
Put another way: around 220 dogs die in Belgrade each year (our estimate), and private cremation averages $260[4] nationally. That adds up to roughly $0.1 million a year locally, which is why prices and packages differ so much from one provider to the next.
We keep the detailed Montana price table on one page so it stays current: see Montana prices.

Before you bury or scatter in Montana
You don't need a permit to have your dog cremated, but what you do afterwards, burying them at home or scattering their ashes in a park, can be governed by local rules. Here's what applies in Montana.
To find your county or city office in Montana, start with the official Montana local government directory.
The Montana page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Belgrade's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
What to do when your dog dies in Belgrade
- If your dog dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning unless you want to. Move your dog to a cool room and cover them with a sheet.
- Put a towel or puppy pad underneath. It's normal for a dog's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your dog into a natural sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes lifting, and the goodbye, easier.
- In the morning, call your vet or one of the crematories covering Belgrade. Give them a rough weight for your dog and say where your dog is now.
- Ask for the price in writing, and make sure it covers the pickup, whichever cremation type you've chosen and the container the ashes arrive in.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes and who will contact you when they're ready.
Memorials and keepsakes for your dog
Belgrade's open setting gives wide views of the Bridger and Gallatin ranges across the fields. Many families keep a memorial right at home: a flat stone in a young lawn, a chokecherry planted along the fence line, an urn on the mantel. If you'd rather scatter ashes up in the mountains on public land, check with the managing agency before you go.

Questions people ask
Roughly how many dogs die in Belgrade each year?
Our estimate is around 220. It comes from Belgrade's population (about 13,107), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog (about 2,800 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.
Does the Belgrade climate change what I should do first?
Only the timing. In July, with highs near 85°F, cool the body and book collection the same day. In January, February, March, April, October, November and December, when lows sit below freezing, a home burial may have to wait for a thaw, so cremation with ashes returned keeps your options open.
Why does the Belgrade page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) reports about 73.4%[3] of Montana residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Belgrade?
Usually yes. Bozeman is about 10 miles away, Helena is about 69 miles away and Butte-Silver Bow is about 72 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Does pet insurance pay for dog cremation?
Usually not under a standard policy, although euthanasia may be covered when it's medically necessary[7]. Some insurers sell add-ons that help: one reimbursed up to $250 toward cremation and burial[8], and another up to $500 for end-of-life costs[9]. Check your policy or call your insurer before you pay a provider in Belgrade.
Can I bury my dog's ashes in winter when the ground is frozen?
Many families in cold places keep the urn at home through winter and bury the ashes in spring, once the ground thaws. Ashes don't need to be buried quickly, so there's no harm in waiting for a day that feels right.
