Hackensack, New Jersey
Getting help for your dog in Hackensack
Hackensack is the Bergen County seat, a small city with courthouse buildings downtown, a large hospital campus and a noticeable line of apartment high-rises along Prospect Avenue. Many pet owners live in those towers or in older two-family houses on the side streets, so a pickup often means elevators, stairs or a narrow driveway. Tell the provider which it is when you book; it helps them send the right crew and equipment.
The Hackensack River runs along the city's eastern edge on its way down to the Meadowlands marshes. Waterside spots in a county this built up usually belong to someone, whether a town, the county or a business, so check before scattering anything. Many families simply keep an urn at home, or plant bulbs in a container on the patio where a favorite animal once sunned itself.
Distance is the thing to ask about in and around Hackensack. A crematory in a larger center such as Yonkers may cover your address, but some charge by the mile beyond a set radius, and a single out-of-hours trip can add a noticeable amount. If you can drive your dog yourself, to the vet or to a meeting point partway, you can often avoid that fee. Ask for the collection price on its own line so you can decide.
With roughly 46,380 residents, Hackensack is the 19th-largest of the 58 New Jersey communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Yonkers, about 10 miles (16 km) away, which is where some providers serving Hackensack are based.
Nearby, we also have local pages for Lodi (2 miles), Garfield (3 miles) and Bergenfield (3 miles), which can help if your vet or the provider you prefer is based there.
Our estimate
9,850
Hackensack: dog-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
46,380 ÷ 2.5 = 18,552 households; × 53% (dog) = 9,850. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
770
Hackensack families who lose a dog each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
9,850 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 770 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
56.5%[3]

The local attitude to cremation
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in New Jersey, at about 56.5%[3], but burial still has deep roots here. You'll find both traditions among dog owners too. Neither is more "proper" than the other; what matters is what feels right for your dog and your family.
The New Jersey figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Heat, cold and collection times in Hackensack
In a mild climate, older dogs often stay comfortable outdoors for much of the year, so decline can be gradual and easy to miss. Many owners in Hackensack find it helps to keep a simple calendar of good days and bad days. When the bad days start to outnumber the good ones, it's a sign to talk with your vet, and to think about aftercare while there's still time to plan it calmly.
Because Hackensack rarely gets very hot or very cold, you have a little more time after a death at home than families in harsher climates. That's a chance to let relatives come and say goodbye, including children and other pets. Keep your dog on a towel in a cool room, away from sunny windows and heating vents, and aim for collection within a day.

Dog cremation prices for Hackensack families
Standard pet insurance usually doesn't cover cremation, though it may cover euthanasia when it's medically necessary[5]. Some policies sell end-of-life add-ons, so check your paperwork before you pay. For comparison, a pet cemetery burial for a dog averages about $831[6], roughly 3.2 times the cost of private cremation[7]. Here's what cremation typically costs by weight.
Multiply it out: roughly 770 dogs a year in Hackensack (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of $260[4] is about $0.2 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.

If it's happening now: a short plan
- While your dog is still comfortable, find out from your vet who handles their cremations and roughly what a private one would cost for a dog your size.
- Use our [cost calculator](/tools/cremation-cost-calculator) for a rough budget, then ask one or two providers in or near Hackensack for a written quote.
- Decide where you'd like the goodbye to happen, at home or at the clinic, and ask whether home visits are available.
- Choose private or communal ahead of time, then note the decision beside the vet's number where you'll find it.
- Think about keepsakes now. Photos, a paw print in ink or a lock of fur set aside are all simpler to organize before the day comes.
- Tell the people who'll want to be there, so nobody learns afterwards that they missed the chance.
- Keep the plan somewhere easy to find, so whoever is home on the day knows what to do.
Keeping your dog close
With July highs around 85F and freezing nights mostly limited to January and February, Hackensack's weather rarely gives you much of a cold buffer. Keep your pet on a cool floor out of the sun, with ice packs wrapped in a towel, and aim for collection within a day. Traffic on Route 4 and Route 17 nearby can slow a van at rush hour, so allow some leeway on timing.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Yonkers to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Yonkers (roughly 10 miles from Hackensack) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
How does Hackensack's weather affect dog aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Hackensack, with average highs around 85°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January and February, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Is cremation common in New Jersey?
For people, yes: about 56.5%[3] of New Jersey deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Hackensack follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Hackensack?
The closest communities we cover are Lodi (about 2 miles), Garfield (about 3 miles) and Bergenfield (about 3 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Hackensack too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is pet cremation regulated in New Jersey?
By one directory's count, only nine US states have laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[8], and as of 2026 just two require written documentation to be given to owners[9]. Whether or not New Jersey is one of them, ask any provider how they identify your dog, whether private means your dog is alone in the chamber, and for all of it in writing.
How long will the ashes take if the crematory is outside Hackensack?
When the cremation happens in a larger center, allow a little longer than in a big city. Many families still get the ashes back within about two weeks, but it depends on how often the provider collects from your area and whether the ashes come back via your vet. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether you can collect them yourself.
