When your dog dies in Lima: cremation options

Lima, Ohio

Your dog's aftercare options around Lima

The Ottawa River cuts through Lima from east to west, with a trail and parkland along parts of its banks where many residents take their animals out. Winters are sharp here, with January nights near 19°F and a stiff wind off the open farmland, so an unheated garage stays cold enough to hold your pet until morning. In a humid July, around 84°F, act within the day.

Lima is the Allen County seat in northwest Ohio, an old oil-boom and factory city on I-75, roughly an hour from Fort Wayne, Dayton or Toledo. Its neighborhoods are mostly older frame and brick houses on modest lots, with newer subdivisions out toward Shawnee and American townships. Since no big metro is close, most aftercare runs through Lima clinics or providers serving several rural counties.

If your dog is old or ill and you live in or near Lima, a phone call now is easier than one later. Ask your vet which crematory they use, what private cremation costs for your dog's weight, how long the ashes take to come back and whether a home visit is possible. Having those answers written down means that when the day comes, you can spend it with your dog instead of on the phone.

With roughly 34,695 residents, Lima is the 43rd-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. Fort Wayne, roughly 58 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Lima run from there.

Families in Lima often end up using a provider from Sidney (31 miles), Findlay (33 miles) and Piqua (42 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

Our estimate

7,350

Lima: dog-owning households, our estimate

How we calculated this

34,695 ÷ 2.5 = 13,878 households; × 53% (dog) = 7,350. Multi-pet homes count once.

Our estimate

580

dog deaths per year in Lima, our estimate

How we calculated this

7,350 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 580 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

53%[1]

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.

12.69 years[2]

US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.

59.1%[3]

The NFDA projected Ohio's cremation rate at 59.1% for 2024.

$260[4]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for private dog cremation at $260 (range $206-$473).

We built the this numbers from CareCredit (Synchrony) and Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation in Ohio, and what it means for dog owners

Cremation now covers roughly 59.1%[3] of human deaths in Ohio, so most families have been to both a burial and a cremation service. A dog's aftercare can turn into a family conversation, with opinions on both sides. One way to settle it: ask where each person would want to remember the dog in five years' time. If the answer is a particular place, burying the ashes there can satisfy everyone.

That Ohio rate is a human one, published by NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). We quote it for Lima only as a pointer to how families here already think about cremation.

How Lima's weather affects the first few hours

Cold months can be hard on older dogs, especially large breeds with arthritis. If your dog is struggling on icy steps or slipping on frozen paths through January, February, March and December, talk to your vet about comfort. If you decide on a home goodbye in winter, choose a warm room, lay out their bed and make sure the collection team has a clear, salted path to the door. Small preparations like that make the day calmer.

Snow and ice can delay collection, especially from rural roads. If a winter storm is coming and your dog is very ill, it's worth asking your vet now what the plan would be, rather than on the night.

How much to budget in Lima

By our estimate, private cremation gets cheaper per pound as dogs get bigger: roughly $9 a pound for a 15 lb dog, about $4.20 at 60 lb and around $4 at 100 lb[5]. So a large dog costs more in total, but not in proportion to its size. When you compare Lima quotes, check which weight band your dog falls into; a dog just over a band line can tip into the next price.

Put another way: around 580 dogs die in Lima each year (our estimate), and private cremation averages $260[4] nationally. That adds up to roughly $0.2 million a year locally, which is why prices and packages differ so much from one provider to the next.

The full price table by size is on our Ohio page, and the services page explains what each option includes.

What Ohio allows: burial, scattering and more

Most of the decisions after a dog's death are yours to make. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Ohio and your local council or city may regulate.

The official Ohio local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Lima.

Home burial and scattering are governed at the Ohio level first; our Ohio rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Lima or your HOA adds anything.

If it's happening now: a short plan

  1. If the death was expected, you and your vet probably agreed a plan already. Ring them to check it still stands.
  2. If it was sudden, call your own vet or whichever emergency clinic is closest to Lima. Let them talk you through what to do right now.
  3. Keep your dog cool, inside the house, taking extra care if it's hot.
  4. Gather a few things to send with your dog, like a favorite blanket or a letter from the children.
  5. Ask the provider three questions: is it private, how is my dog identified, and when will the ashes come back?
  6. Confirm the price in writing ahead of pickup, with collection and the urn both included.

Honoring your dog after the cremation

Plenty of Lima households work shifts at the refinery, the tank plant or the area's factories, which means a pet's final hours can fall at 3 a.m. or in the middle of a double. Find out now which clinic in town takes after-hours calls and whether it handles cremation itself or refers you. Then ask plainly about communal versus private cremation and what each costs.

Questions people ask

When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in Lima?

January, February, March and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 84°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.

How do Ohio attitudes to cremation compare?

NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Ohio human cremation rate at about 59.1%[3]. We show it on the Lima page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.

Roughly how many dogs die in Lima each year?

Our estimate is around 580. It comes from Lima's population (about 34,695), the average household size, the share of homes with a dog (about 7,350 households here) and the average lifespan. It is arithmetic, not a count, so read it as a rough floor.

Where are the providers that serve Lima actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Fort Wayne, about 58 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Lima and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Is pet cremation regulated in Ohio?

By one directory's count, only nine US states have laws aimed specifically at pet crematories[7], and as of 2026 just two require written documentation to be given to owners[8]. Whether or not Ohio is one of them, ask any provider how they identify your dog, whether private means your dog is alone in the chamber, and for all of it in writing.

Should I choose cremation or burial for my dog?

Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[9]. Burial gives you a place to visit but depends on land and local rules; cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want to keep your dog close. You can also combine them by burying the ashes.
