Springfield, Ohio
Where to start in Springfield
Freezing weather here can stretch from November into March, and January nights average around 19 degrees. In those months, a garage or cellar keeps your pet cool enough while you arrange cremation. Summers turn hot and humid, with afternoons reaching the mid-80s, so on a July day act within hours: air conditioning, a cool floor and ice packs wrapped in cloth.
Springfield is the Clark County seat, a manufacturing city on the old National Road, roughly midway between Dayton and Columbus. Older brick neighborhoods and Victorian houses near downtown and Wittenberg University give way to postwar streets and farm country at the edges. Providers from Springfield, Dayton or Columbus may cover your address, so compare pickup charges, from homes in town and out on county roads, before you choose.
Around Springfield, families often handle more of the process themselves: driving their dog to the clinic, picking up the ashes from the vet's front desk and asking a local woodworker for a box instead of ordering from a catalog. None of that is second best. If you'd like to keep things close to home, ask your vet which parts you can do yourself and which the crematory needs to handle.
Springfield's population is around 58,281, the 12th-largest of the 106 Ohio communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Columbus, about 42 miles (68 km) away, which is where some providers serving Springfield are based.
For a second opinion on price, Fairborn (14 miles), Huber Heights (18 miles) and Xenia (19 miles) are close enough that their providers cover Springfield routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
Our estimate
12,500
How many dog-owning households Springfield has (estimate)
How we calculated this
58,281 ÷ 2.5 = 23,312 households; × 53% (dog) = 12,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
12,500 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 970 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation in Ohio, and what it means for dog owners
About 59.1%[3] of people in Ohio choose cremation, and the share keeps rising as families move, downsize and live further apart. That mobility is one of the most common reasons dog owners here choose cremation too: an urn can travel, a garden grave can't. If you already have a family plot or a spot on a relative's land, though, burying the ashes there can give you the best of both.
The Ohio figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Timing your dog's aftercare in Springfield's climate
Cold months can be hard on older dogs, especially large breeds with arthritis. If your dog is struggling on icy steps or slipping on frozen paths through January, February, March, November and December, talk to your vet about comfort. If you decide on a home goodbye in winter, choose a warm room, lay out their bed and make sure the collection team has a clear, salted path to the door. Small preparations like that make the day calmer.
Cold snaps make a sick dog's last days harder in practical ways: frozen yards, early darkness and roads that close with little warning. In January, when Springfield lows average about 19°F, a home euthanasia can be the gentlest option for a large or immobile dog, sparing everyone an icy trip to the clinic. Ask your vet early in the season whether they make winter home visits and what they charge.

What dog owners in Springfield typically pay
Where you live in the US moves the price. In-home euthanasia for a dog averages $364 in Texas but $572 in Massachusetts[5], and pet care spending runs well above average in some metros and below it in others. In Springfield, use the weight-based ranges below as a guide, and ask local providers for a written total rather than relying on a national average.
Here's a number you won't find elsewhere: if every one of the roughly 970 dogs lost in Springfield each year were privately cremated at the national average of about $260[4], local families would spend around $0.3 million a year. That's our estimate, and it's why several providers compete for work here.

Checking the rules in Ohio before you decide
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Ohio before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in.
Not sure which office covers Springfield? The Ohio local government directory is the official list.
The Ohio page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Springfield's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
If it's happening now: a short plan
- If your dog dies at night, there's no reason to phone anyone before morning unless it would help you. Carry your dog somewhere cool and lay a sheet over them.
- Put a towel or puppy pad underneath. It's normal for a dog's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your dog into a natural sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes lifting, and the goodbye, easier.
- In the morning, call your vet or one of the crematories covering Springfield. Give them a rough weight for your dog and say where your dog is now.
- Ask for the price in writing, and make sure it covers the pickup, whichever cremation type you've chosen and the container the ashes arrive in.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes, along with the name of whoever will get in touch once they're back.
Ways to remember your dog locally
Buck Creek State Park, with its reservoir and trails on the city's east side, and the Mad River valley to the west are familiar outdoor places for many Springfield families. Some later want to bring a pinch of ashes back to a place like that, on a calm day in spring or fall. State parks have their own rules, so check with the park office before scattering.
The services page is the place to compare what is included, run the numbers with the free planning tools, go deeper with the guides or catch up on recent articles, or see what other families chose in the poll results. If you live between Springfield and Akron, Cincinnati, Toledo and Dayton, either page applies. Every other community in Ohio, and all of the United States, is listed too.

Questions people ask
Is cremation common in Ohio?
For people, yes: about 59.1%[3] of Ohio deaths end in cremation, according to NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Springfield follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve Springfield actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Columbus, about 42 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Springfield and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Springfield?
Usually yes. Fairborn is about 14 miles away, Huber Heights is about 18 miles away and Xenia is about 19 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
How does Springfield's weather affect dog aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Springfield, with average highs around 84°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, March, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Do crematories charge extra to collect from a rural address near Springfield?
Some do. Many providers include collection within a set distance and charge per mile beyond it, or add a flat fee for remote or out-of-hours trips. Ask for the collection price separately when you get a quote. If the fee is high, taking your dog to your vet or meeting the provider partway are common ways to reduce it.
Does pet insurance pay for dog cremation?
Usually not under a standard policy, although euthanasia may be covered when it's medically necessary[7]. Some insurers sell add-ons that help: one reimbursed up to $250 toward cremation and burial[8], and another up to $500 for end-of-life costs[9]. Check your policy or call your insurer before you pay a provider in Springfield.
