Burial, cremation and tradition in Tennessee
In Tennessee, where only about 48.9%[3] of people are cremated, pet crematories can be further apart than in high-cremation areas. That can mean a longer wait for the ashes or a mileage charge for collection. It doesn't mean worse care. Ask your vet which crematory they work with, how far away it is and whether they collect on set days, so you know what to expect before you agree.

What the seasons mean for aftercare in Memphis
In Memphis, July highs average about 92°F, and humidity can make the house feel warmer still. Heat and humidity together shorten the time you have before collection, so if your dog dies at home in summer, try not to wait until morning to make the first call. Burial and scattering rules for Tennessee
It helps to separate two sets of rules in Tennessee: those for a whole body and those for ashes. Burying a dog's body usually comes with conditions on where and how, mainly to protect groundwater and wells. Ashes are treated far more lightly almost everywhere, because they're dry, sterile bone mineral. That's why many families who want a grave to visit choose cremation first and then bury the urn.

If it's happening now: a short plan

Small ways to keep your dog's memory close
Memphis sanitation crews will collect deceased animals from city streets and public property, but the city's guidance excludes private yards, the inside of homes, apartments and private developments, and residents of Germantown, Bartlett or unincorporated Shelby County fall outside it altogether. In practice, a family pet that dies at home needs a private arrangement. When you ask for options, say whether you are inside city limits and whether you live in a house or an apartment complex.
