Sherman, Texas
How dog cremation works in Sherman
Many Sherman families spend weekends up at Lake Texoma or at Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge on its southern arm. Scattering ashes on federal land or water there requires checking with the managing agency first. Closer to home, a flower bed, a favorite shade tree in the yard or a spot on family land needs no permission and can be visited anytime.
Sherman, the seat of Grayson County, sits along US 75 about 30 miles north of McKinney and roughly 15 miles south of Lake Texoma, with Denison as its close neighbor. Housing runs from tree-lined older neighborhoods near downtown and Austin College to newer subdivisions and rural homes on acreage. If you live outside the city limits, text the provider a pin drop and warn them about any cattle guard or long gravel lane.
One advantage of a town the size of Sherman is that people know each other. Your vet is likely to know the crematory staff personally and can tell you honestly how they work. Don't be shy about asking what they'd choose for their own dog.
With roughly 52,417 residents, Sherman is the 72nd-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is McKinney, about 30 miles (48 km) away, which is where some providers serving Sherman are based.
Sherman sits within easy reach of Denison (10 miles), Anna (20 miles) and Celina (23 miles). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Sherman; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

11,000
Sherman: dog-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
52,417 ÷ 2.5 = 20,967 households; × 53% (dog) = 11,000. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate

How we calculated this
11,000 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 880 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

Burial, cremation and tradition in Texas
About 55.7%[3] of people in Texas choose cremation, and the share keeps rising as families move, downsize and live further apart. That mobility is one of the most common reasons dog owners here choose cremation too: an urn can travel, a garden grave can't. If you already have a family plot or a spot on a relative's land, though, burying the ashes there can give you the best of both.
We take the Texas rate from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Sherman, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
Planning around the weather in Sherman
Hot pavements in Sherman matter in a dog's final weeks. When August highs reach around 93°F, asphalt gets far hotter than the air, and older dogs with thin pads or weak legs may refuse walks altogether. Short walks at dawn, cool floors indoors and water within reach keep them comfortable. If even those become a struggle, it's a good moment to talk honestly with your vet about quality of life.
Heat also matters for the goodbye itself. If you're planning a home euthanasia in August, book a morning or evening appointment when the house is cooler, and ask whether the vet can arrange collection straight afterwards.

Budgeting for your dog's cremation
Across the US, the typical end-of-life bill for a dog comes to about $399 with euthanasia at the clinic followed by private cremation, and about $670 when the vet comes to your home[5]. Those are national figures; what Sherman families pay depends on local costs, your dog's size and extras such as a paw print or an engraved urn. The table shows how cremation alone changes with weight.
Here's a number you won't find elsewhere: if every one of the roughly 880 dogs lost in Sherman each year were privately cremated at the national average of about $260[4], local families would spend around $0.2 million a year. That's our estimate, and it's why several providers compete for work here.

Rules worth knowing in Texas
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Texas before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in.

For Texas's rules on burying a pet at home or scattering ashes, see the Texas guide. Local rules in Sherman can be stricter than the state's, especially in homeowners' associations and rentals.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- If your dog has been hit by a car or hurt outside, get them to the nearest animal hospital straight away, even if you're afraid it's hopeless. The staff will check for signs of life.
- Move your dog gently using a board, a blanket or a coat, keeping the head and spine supported, and have another person drive so you can stay beside your dog.
- If your dog has already died, the clinic team will confirm it and can hold your dog until you've chosen the aftercare.
- Ask whether the team can clean your dog up first, if seeing them that way would make the goodbye easier to bear.
- Choose private or communal cremation when you're ready. There's no harm in taking a day or two over it.
- Look after yourself and anyone who saw it happen. Losing a dog this suddenly is a shock, and it helps to talk about it, whether with a friend or on a pet loss line.
Honoring your dog after the cremation
Sherman's August highs average around 93F, a bit milder than the Dallas area, but January lows near 34F bring the chance of ice and sleet. In hot weather, move your pet somewhere air-conditioned and lay them on a cool floor with frozen packs wrapped in cloth. In winter, an unheated mudroom or garage can keep the body cool overnight while you make arrangements.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Sherman?
The closest communities we cover are Denison (about 10 miles), Anna (about 20 miles) and Celina (about 23 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Sherman too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
How many dog owners live in Sherman?
By our estimate, about 11,000 households in Sherman have at least one dog, and around 880 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 52,417, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Where are the providers that serve Sherman actually based?
Some are local, and some run from McKinney, about 30 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Sherman and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How do Texas attitudes to cremation compare?
NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) puts the Texas human cremation rate at about 55.7%[3]. We show it on the Sherman page because pet aftercare choices tend to track it: where cremation is normal for people, communal and private pet cremation are both easy to find.
What if a storm or hurricane delays pickup of my dog?
Call the provider to agree a new time, then keep your dog as cool as you can: the lowest, darkest room, wrapped in a sheet, with bags of ice or frozen bottles around the body that you replace as they melt. If the power is out for a long time, an emergency vet outside the affected area may be able to hold your dog. Providers are used to weather delays.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation?
In a private cremation your dog is cremated alone and the ashes returned are only theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and ashes aren't returned; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Private typically costs about twice as much.
