Southlake, Texas
Where to start in Southlake
Grapevine Lake borders the north side of town, and its shoreline trails and nature preserves are where many local households got outside with their animals. Scattering on public lakefront usually requires an okay from the managing agency. With big lots common here, some owners pick a sheltered corner of their own garden instead, or plant a memorial tree using part of the ashes.
Southlake is an affluent suburb in northeast Tarrant County, with large lots, winding streets and plenty of custom homes set back from the road. That space makes home pickups easy, but long private drives and gated communities can slow things down, so share gate codes and clear instructions when you call. DFW Airport sits just to the southeast, and Irving is about 14 miles away for providers based there.
If you live outside Southlake itself, on a farm or a rural road, ask whether the provider charges extra for mileage. Many will collect from your home, but a long round trip can add to the price. Some families choose to bring their dog to the vet or directly to the crematory to keep costs down.
Southlake's population is around 31,175, the 111th-largest of the 325 Texas communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Irving, about 14 miles (22 km) away, which is where some providers serving Southlake are based.
Our pages for Grapevine (3 miles), Colleyville (4 miles) and Westlake (5 miles) describe the same choices from those towns' point of view, and the providers overlap, so a quote from one often covers Southlake as well.
Our estimate
6,600
Southlake: dog-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
31,175 ÷ 2.5 = 12,470 households; × 53% (dog) = 6,600. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
520
Estimated dog losses in Southlake each year
How we calculated this
6,600 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 520 a year. The real figure is unlikely to be lower.

Burial, cremation and tradition in Texas
Cremation is now chosen for about 55.7%[3] of people in Texas, but there are still plenty of places here where a backyard grave is how dogs have always been laid to rest. Neither tradition is wrong. What we'd suggest is simply choosing on purpose rather than by default: ask what each option costs and involves, then decide what fits your dog, your home and your family.
The Texas percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Southlake, not as a count of pets.
How Southlake's weather affects the first few hours
Southlake summers are hot: August averages highs around 96°F. Heat speeds everything up after a dog dies, so if it happens at home in the warmer months, move your dog to the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and keep the air conditioning running. Ask the provider for same-day or next-morning collection.
Hot pavements in Southlake matter in a dog's final weeks. When August highs reach around 96°F, asphalt gets far hotter than the air, and older dogs with thin pads or weak legs may refuse walks altogether. Short walks at dawn, cool floors indoors and water within reach keep them comfortable. If even those become a struggle, it's a good moment to talk honestly with your vet about quality of life.

Budgeting for your dog's cremation
Across the US, the typical end-of-life bill for a dog comes to about $399 with euthanasia at the clinic followed by private cremation, and about $670 when the vet comes to your home[5]. Those are national figures; what Southlake families pay depends on local costs, your dog's size and extras such as a paw print or an engraved urn. The table shows how cremation alone changes with weight.
Multiply it out: roughly 520 dogs a year in Southlake (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of $260[4] is about $0.1 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Texas: Texas costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

Checking the rules in Texas before you decide
It helps to separate two sets of rules in Texas: those for a whole body and those for ashes. Burying a dog's body usually comes with conditions on where and how, mainly to protect groundwater and wells. Ashes are treated far more lightly almost everywhere, because they're dry, sterile bone mineral. That's why many families who want a grave to visit choose cremation first and then bury the urn.
The official Texas local government directory lists every county and city office, which is the quickest way to find who to ask in Southlake.
The Texas page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Southlake's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If your dog dies while you're away from home, find the nearest vet or emergency clinic first. They can confirm the death and hold your dog while you decide.
- Decide whether to bring your dog home or cremate where you are. A cremation nearby, with the ashes posted home afterwards, is usually simpler than driving a long way with your dog.
- If you drive your dog home, keep the car cool, lay a blanket underneath and avoid long stops in warm weather.
- Ask a local crematory whether they can return the ashes by tracked, signed-for delivery, and what that adds to the price.
- Check before crossing a border. Moving a dog's body between countries can involve paperwork; ashes are usually far simpler to carry, though airlines set their own rules for urns.
- Tell your own vet when you're back in Southlake so the practice can close your dog's file and no more reminders go out.
Small ways to keep your dog's memory close
Southlake summers peak in August around 96F, and a pet who passes in a hot backyard or garage should come inside right away. A spare comforter on a hard floor in a cool room, with frozen gel packs in a cotton sack next to the body, holds things steady until pickup. January lows sit near 36F, and a rare winter storm can glaze the hilly cul-de-sacs, pushing a collection back a day.

Questions people ask
Which nearby towns can I compare with Southlake?
The closest communities we cover are Grapevine (about 3 miles), Colleyville (about 4 miles) and Westlake (about 5 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Southlake too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Where are the providers that serve Southlake actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Irving, about 14 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Southlake and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Why does the Southlake page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 55.7%[3] of Texas residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
How many dog owners live in Southlake?
By our estimate, about 6,600 households in Southlake have at least one dog, and around 520 are lost each year. We calculate this from the city's population of about 31,175, the average household size and national ownership and lifespan figures, so treat it as a floor rather than an exact count.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my dog?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[7]. Burial gives you a place to visit but depends on land and local rules; cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want to keep your dog close. You can also combine them by burying the ashes.
How long will the ashes take if the crematory is outside Southlake?
When the cremation happens in a larger center, allow a little longer than in a big city. Many families still get the ashes back within about two weeks, but it depends on how often the provider collects from your area and whether the ashes come back via your vet. Ask for an expected date when you book, and whether you can collect them yourself.
