Orem, Utah
Who handles dog aftercare in Orem
Orem's summers are hot and dry, often touching 95 degrees in July, and winters bring snow and the valley inversions that trap cold, hazy air for days. In either extreme, a pet's body should be kept cool, wrapped in a blanket, and moved to a vet or aftercare provider within a day. Icy streets on the bench slow down pickups, so mention a steep driveway when you call.
Pets in Orem range from cats and indoor rabbits to parakeets, tortoises and aquarium fish, and each leaves a very different amount of ash. A budgie or a betta may return only a pinch, while a large rabbit or cat returns noticeably more. Giving the provider the species and an approximate weight helps them suggest a container that fits, rather than a one-size urn that looks empty.
One advantage of a town the size of Orem is that people know each other. Your vet is likely to know the crematory staff personally and can tell you honestly how they work. Don't be shy about asking what they'd choose for their own dog.
Orem is home to about 95,214 people, the 7th-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Salt Lake City, about 34 miles (54 km) away, which is where some providers serving Orem are based.
If you want to compare providers, look at Provo (5 miles), Pleasant Grove (6 miles) and American Fork (7 miles). Distance matters because pickup fees and the time until the ashes come back both grow with the drive.
Our estimate
20,000
Estimated dog-owning households in Orem
How we calculated this
95,214 ÷ 2.5 = 38,086 households; × 53% (dog) = 20,000. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
1,600
Orem families who lose a dog each year (estimate)
How we calculated this
20,000 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 1,600 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

What local cremation habits mean for you
In areas like Utah, with a human cremation rate of about 46.1%[3], pet cemeteries are often more visible than pet crematories, and some run a cremation service as well. If you've driven past one, it's worth a call even if you don't want a burial. Ask whether they cremate on site, what they charge for a private cremation at your dog's weight, and whether they collect from vets.
The Utah figure comes from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Timing your dog's aftercare in Orem's climate
A place with Orem's seasons gives you natural moments for a memorial. Families often choose a mild spring or fall day to scatter ashes or bury an urn, avoiding the heat of July and the frozen ground of January, February, November and December. There's no deadline. Ashes keep indefinitely in a sealed container, so you can wait for the day that feels right, perhaps your dog's birthday or the first warm weekend of the year.
Plan the goodbye around the weather where you can: a summer home euthanasia is easier in the cool of the morning, and a winter one is easier when roads are clear. Your vet will understand if you ask to shift an appointment for either reason.

What dog cremation costs in Orem
Expect the total to depend on four things: your dog's weight, private or communal, how your dog is collected and what the ashes come back in. The ranges below are typical US prices; ask any Orem provider for a written total before you agree.
Put another way: around 1,600 dogs die in Orem each year (our estimate), and private cremation averages $260[4] nationally. That adds up to roughly $0.4 million a year locally, which is why prices and packages differ so much from one provider to the next.

What's allowed in Utah after your dog dies
Rules for pets after death are usually simple, but they're set at more than one level: Utah, then your city, county or council, and sometimes a homeowners' association or landlord. The strictest one applies. If you're thinking about a home burial, check all of them; if you're choosing cremation, the rules mostly affect where you scatter the ashes afterwards.
To find your county or city office in Utah, start with the official Utah local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Utah level first; our Utah rules summary has the detail. Then check whether Orem or your HOA adds anything.
What to do first, and what can wait
- Take a breath. There is no clock running on the first hour. When a dog dies at home, settle them onto a towel somewhere cool and, if you're able, gently close their eyes.
- Take anything you want to keep now: a paw print, a clipping of fur, their collar and tags.
- Call your vet (or an emergency clinic out of hours) and tell them what happened. They can confirm the death if you're unsure and explain their aftercare arrangement.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. Every other decision, the cost included, follows from this one.
- Arrange collection from your home or the clinic, and ask for the total cost in writing.
- Choose what the ashes come home in, or keep the simple container for now and choose an urn later.
- Let yourself grieve. Share the news with everyone who loved your dog, and leave the lead by the door until you feel like moving it.
Small ways to keep your dog's memory close
Orem sits between Provo and the mouth of Provo Canyon, with Mount Timpanogos rising behind the east bench and Utah Valley University's campus off University Parkway. Most of the city is settled single-family streets, many built on former orchard land, plus a growing number of apartments near the university. Tenants in those buildings should read the lease and talk to the landlord before making any plans for a pet's remains on the property.

Questions people ask
Where are the providers that serve Orem actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Salt Lake City, about 34 miles away. That is normal for a town this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Orem and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
How does Orem's weather affect dog aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Orem, with average highs around 95°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February, November and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Which nearby towns can I compare with Orem?
The closest communities we cover are Provo (about 5 miles), Pleasant Grove (about 6 miles) and American Fork (about 7 miles). Providers based in those places often serve Orem too. Ask each one for a written total that includes collection, so the distance is priced in.
Is Orem big enough to have several dog aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 20,000 Orem households keep a dog and around 1,600 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 95,214), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Do I need a vet to confirm my dog has died?
It isn't usually required, but it can be reassuring if you're unsure, especially after a sudden death. Your vet or an emergency clinic can confirm it and then arrange collection for cremation at the same time.
Does pet insurance pay for dog cremation?
Usually not under a standard policy, although euthanasia may be covered when it's medically necessary[6]. Some insurers sell add-ons that help: one reimbursed up to $250 toward cremation and burial[7], and another up to $500 for end-of-life costs[8]. Check your policy or call your insurer before you pay a provider in Orem.
