West Haven, Utah
Who handles dog aftercare in West Haven
West Haven spreads across flat ground west of Ogden and Roy in Weber County, where cul-de-sacs of new homes have replaced many of the old hay and dairy fields. Ogden's clinics are only a few miles east, and Salt Lake City is a bit over half an hour south. Because so much of the town is newly built, plenty of residents haven't yet picked a regular vet, and that's worth sorting out before an emergency.
The Weber River and the marshes near the Great Salt Lake lie within easy reach of West Haven, and the river parkway trail is a regular outing for families with their animals. Riverbanks and wetland preserves are shared ground, so they aren't places to leave ashes casually. A new yard offers a blank canvas instead: a young tree planted over a small portion of remains can grow with the neighborhood.
If your dog is old or ill and you live in or near West Haven, a phone call now is easier than one later. Ask your vet which crematory they use, what private cremation costs for your dog's weight, how long the ashes take to come back and whether a home visit is possible. Having those answers written down means that when the day comes, you can spend it with your dog instead of on the phone.
West Haven's population is around 25,627, the 41st-largest of the 52 Utah communities we cover. The nearest larger centre is Salt Lake City, about 32 miles (52 km) away, which is where some providers serving West Haven are based.
Families in West Haven often end up using a provider from Roy (3 miles), Ogden (5 miles, a larger centre) and Clinton (5 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.
Our estimate
5,450
West Haven: dog-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
25,627 ÷ 2.5 = 10,251 households; × 53% (dog) = 5,450. A household with several pets counts once.
Our estimate
430
dog deaths per year in West Haven, our estimate
How we calculated this
5,450 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 430 a year. A floor, not a ceiling.

53% of US households own a dog, which is about 71 million households.
12.69 years[2]
US dogs have an average life expectancy at birth of 12.69 years.
46.1%[3]
The NFDA projected Utah's cremation rate at 46.1% for 2024.
$260[4]
CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for private dog cremation at $260 (range $206-$473).
We built the this numbers from Montoya et al. 2023, Frontiers in Veterinary Science and CareCredit (Synchrony), and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Burial, cremation and tradition in Utah
With about 46.1%[3] of people cremated, Utah is a place where burial is still common. That can mean fewer pet crematories locally and a little more travel for your dog. It also means your vet will be used to both requests, so ask openly about either.
The Utah percentage above is from NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for West Haven, not as a count of pets.
What the seasons mean for aftercare in West Haven
Some families in cold places cremate first and bury the ashes later, once the ground thaws. It's a lovely compromise: your dog comes home in an urn now, and in spring you plant them under a tree or in a favorite corner of the garden.
Snow and ice can delay collection, especially from rural roads. If a winter storm is coming and your dog is very ill, it's worth asking your vet now what the plan would be, rather than on the night.

How much to budget in West Haven
Most West Haven families pay somewhere in the ranges below. A private cremation for a medium-size dog usually lands in the low hundreds; communal is roughly half. Home euthanasia, if you want it, is a separate cost: about $410[5] on average nationally, compared with $139[6] in a clinic.
Multiply it out: roughly 430 dogs a year in West Haven (our estimate) at the national private-cremation average of $260[4] is about $0.1 million of local spending. That is why it pays to ask two providers, not one.

What Utah allows: burial, scattering and more
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Utah before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in.
To find your county or city office in Utah, start with the official Utah local government directory.
Home burial and scattering are governed at the Utah level first; our Utah rules summary has the detail. Then check whether West Haven or your HOA adds anything.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- Book the appointment for a slot that works for each person who'd like to be present, and find out if a home visit is possible.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, rather than being handed the question while you're upset. The usual choices are a private cremation, a communal one or burial at home.
- Ask the vet to arrange collection, or let them know the name of the crematory you've already picked.
- Prepare a quiet space where your dog's own bed can go, plus a blanket and some treats they love.
- Settle paperwork and payment first if you can, so there's nothing to sign afterwards.
- Stay as long as you need after your dog has died. No one is going to rush you out.
- Check the written confirmation of the cremation type and return date before the team leaves.
Small ways to keep your dog's memory close
Wind across the open fields can make a February night here feel far colder than the thermometer suggests, while July peaks in the upper 80s. In either season, a body left outdoors or in a detached garage is exposed to temperature swings. Bring it into a cool interior room, wrap it in an old sheet, and plan to have it collected or taken to the clinic within about a day.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from West Haven?
Usually yes. Roy is about 3 miles away, Ogden is about 5 miles away and Clinton is about 5 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the West Haven page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. NFDA 2024 Cremation & Burial Report state projections (via Occasional Sage) (2024) reports about 46.1%[3] of Utah residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Will I have to travel to Salt Lake City to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Salt Lake City (roughly 32 miles from West Haven) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
When is the hardest time of year to arrange a burial in West Haven?
January, February, November and December: average lows are below freezing then, and frozen ground makes a home grave slow or impossible until it thaws. The other pressure point is July, when highs around 87°F mean a body needs cooling and collecting quickly.
How much ash will I get back from my dog?
Cremated remains usually weigh about 3 to 5% of your dog's body weight[8], so a 30 kg (66 lb) dog typically leaves about 0.9 to 1.5 kg[9]. For urns, a common rule of thumb is one cubic inch of space per pound of body weight. Our urn size calculator does the math for your dog.
Is it legal to bury my dog at home in Utah?
In many places it is, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the property. Rules vary within Utah too, so check with your city or county before digging. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your dog with you.
