Pasco, Washington
Your dog's aftercare options around Pasco
Pasco is the Franklin County seat, on the north bank of the Columbia across from Kennewick and Richland, and has grown quickly in recent decades, with new subdivisions spreading west and north of the older core. Most aftercare providers serving the Tri-Cities cover Pasco too. Check with your veterinarian about which crematory it works with, whether that firm collects from homes, and whether staff can explain options in Spanish.
Pasco's summers bake, with July afternoons around 91F, and dust storms occasionally sweep through on windy days. After a loss on a scorching afternoon, move the body into air conditioning straight away, away from sunny windows, cover it and arrange collection within hours. December through February nights hover just under freezing, which helps a little, but a heated home still warms quickly.
Families in and around Pasco often combine local and regional help: the goodbye happens at home or with the local vet, and the cremation itself takes place in a larger centre such as Pasco. If you want a witnessed cremation, ask early, because it may mean a drive.
Pasco's population is around 82,848, the 16th-largest of the 67 Washington communities we cover.
The closest communities we cover are Kennewick (5 miles), Richland (8 miles) and West Richland (13 miles). Providers serving those towns often travel to Pasco too, so it can be worth asking them for a quote.
Our estimate
17,500
Pasco: dog-owning households, our estimate
How we calculated this
82,848 ÷ 2.5 = 33,139 households; × 53% (dog) = 17,500. Homes are counted once however many pets they keep.
Our estimate
1,400
Estimated dog losses in Pasco each year
How we calculated this
17,500 dog-owning homes ÷ average lifespan (dog: 12.69 yrs) ≈ 1,400 a year. Treat it as a minimum.

Cremation in Washington, and what it means for dog owners
With about 79.1%[3] of people in Washington choosing cremation, you'll rarely need to explain your decision to anyone here. It also shapes what's on offer: providers in high-cremation areas tend to stock a wider range of urns, keepsake jewelry and witnessed cremation, because families ask for them. Use that choice. Ask to see the full range before you pick, rather than accepting the first urn on the list.
The Washington percentage above is from Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Pasco, not as a count of pets.
Timing your dog's aftercare in Pasco's climate
Winter weather in Pasco can make travel slow, and rural collection routes are often the first to be postponed when roads ice over. The upside of cold is time: in an unheated garage or porch that stays near freezing, your dog can wait a day or two for collection. Wrap them in a blanket, lay them on a board or in a sturdy box and make sure other animals can't get to them.
Cold snaps make a sick dog's last days harder in practical ways: frozen yards, early darkness and roads that close with little warning. In January, when Pasco lows average about 29°F, a home euthanasia can be the gentlest option for a large or immobile dog, sparing everyone an icy trip to the clinic. Ask your vet early in the season whether they make winter home visits and what they charge.

Pricing dog cremation in Pasco, line by line
Most Pasco families pay somewhere in the ranges below. A private cremation for a medium-size dog usually lands in the low hundreds; communal is roughly half. Home euthanasia, if you want it, is a separate cost: about $410[5] on average nationally, compared with $139[6] in a clinic.
Here's a number you won't find elsewhere: if every one of the roughly 1,400 dogs lost in Pasco each year were privately cremated at the national average of about $260[4], local families would spend around $0.4 million a year. That's our estimate, and it's why several providers compete for work here.

Checking the rules in Washington before you decide
It helps to separate two sets of rules in Washington: those for a whole body and those for ashes. Burying a dog's body usually comes with conditions on where and how, mainly to protect groundwater and wells. Ashes are treated far more lightly almost everywhere, because they're dry, sterile bone mineral. That's why many families who want a grave to visit choose cremation first and then bury the urn.
Not sure which office covers Pasco? The Washington local government directory is the official list.
The Washington page sets out who oversees pet cremation and what the state says about burial and scattering. Pasco's own bylaws can sit on top of that, so ask before you dig.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour. If your dog died at home, lay them on a towel in a cool room and close their eyes if you can.
- Take anything you want to keep now: a paw print, a clipping of fur, their collar and tags.
- Call your vet, or the emergency clinic if it's after hours, and let them know. If you're not certain your dog has died they can confirm it, and they'll walk you through how their aftercare works.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. Every other decision, the cost included, follows from this one.
- Arrange collection, whether from the clinic or your front door, and get the full price put in writing.
- Choose what the ashes come home in, or accept the basic container to start with and pick an urn when you're ready.
- Let yourself grieve. Share the news with everyone who loved your dog, and leave the lead by the door until you feel like moving it.
Keeping your dog close
Sacajawea State Park sits at the point where the Snake River flows into the Columbia, just southeast of town, and many families have spent summer evenings there. As state parkland, it has its own rules for ashes, so check with the park first. Many households keep remains at home or plant a small tree in the backyard, often in a newer yard still filling in.

Questions people ask
How does Pasco's weather affect dog aftercare?
July is the hottest month in Pasco, with average highs around 91°F, so prompt collection matters most then. Average lows drop below freezing in January, February and December, which can make digging a grave hard until spring.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Pasco?
Usually yes. Kennewick is about 5 miles away, Richland is about 8 miles away and West Richland is about 13 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Pasco page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Direct Cremate (citing CANA) (2024) reports about 79.1%[3] of Washington residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is Pasco big enough to have several dog aftercare providers?
Probably, on the numbers. By our estimate about 17,500 Pasco households keep a dog and around 1,400 lose one each year, which is enough steady demand to support more than one provider. We derive that from population (about 82,848), household size and national ownership and lifespan figures.
Is it legal to bury my dog at home in Washington?
In many places it is, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the property. Rules vary within Washington too, so check with your city or county before digging. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your dog with you.
Does pet insurance pay for dog cremation?
Usually not under a standard policy, although euthanasia may be covered when it's medically necessary[8]. Some insurers sell add-ons that help: one reimbursed up to $250 toward cremation and burial[9], and another up to $500 for end-of-life costs[10]. Check your policy or call your insurer before you pay a provider in Pasco.
