Cost is part of why cremation keeps gaining ground in Belgium, where it now accounts for around 67.98%[1] of human deaths. For dogs the gap is plain in US figures: a pet cemetery burial averages about $831[4], against about $260[2] for private cremation. A home burial costs less still, if your land and local rules allow it. Having the numbers in front of you can make a family discussion calmer.

Checking the rules in Brussels-Capital before you decide
Rules in Brussels-Capital also cover a few situations people rarely think about until they happen: a dog who bit someone shortly before dying, which in some places means rabies testing, or a dog who died on someone else's land. The first 48 hours, step by step
- Book the appointment for a slot that works for each person who'd like to be present, and find out if a home visit is possible.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, so you're not asked to choose in the moment. Private cremation, communal cremation or home burial are the usual options.
- Ask the vet to arrange collection, or let them know the name of the crematory you've already picked.
- Prepare a quiet space with your dog's bed, a blanket and a few favorite treats.
- Settle paperwork and payment first where possible, so the moment after isn't interrupted by forms.
- Stay as long as you need after your dog has died. No one is going to rush you out.
- Check the written confirmation while the team is still there: cremation type and the date the ashes are due back.
Honoring your dog after the cremation
Belgium's damp, changeable climate means cool temperatures for much of the year, which gives you a little breathing room if your pet dies at home. Keep the body in the coolest room, on a blanket, away from radiators. In summer heat waves, which Brussels now sees more often, arrange cremation within a day and ask about refrigerated storage if the weekend gets in the way.
