The local attitude to cremation
Faith and family custom can shape this choice more than cost. In Belgium, a place where cremation accounts for about 67.98%[1] of human deaths, families whose congregation leans towards burial live alongside families who have cremated for generations. If faith matters to you, ask your minister or a community elder how others have marked a pet's death. Many families find a few words at a small gathering means a lot, whichever option they choose.

Rules worth knowing in Flanders
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Flanders allows. You don't need a permit to have your dog cremated, and keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole dog and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces.
In Belgium, pet crematoria serve all three regions, and your vet can usually arrange individual or collective cremation. Rules on burying a pet in your garden depend on your region and municipality. Ask for the price for your dog's weight, whether collection is included and whether you can be present for the cremation.
Your next steps, one at a time
- Take a breath. There is no clock running on the first hour. When a dog dies at home, settle them onto a towel somewhere cool and, if you're able, gently close their eyes.
- Take anything you want to keep now: the collar and tags, a snip of fur, an inked paw print.
- Call your vet, or the emergency clinic if it's after hours, and let them know. If you're not certain your dog has died they can confirm it, and they'll walk you through how their aftercare works.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. Every other decision, the cost included, follows from this one.
- Arrange collection from your home or the clinic, and ask for the total cost in writing.
- Choose what the ashes come home in, or keep the simple container for now and choose an urn later.
- Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your dog, and put the lead away when you're ready, not before.

Will I have to travel to Antwerp to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Antwerp (roughly 32 miles from Ghent) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Is cremation common in Belgium?
