Cremation in Denmark: why it matters for your dog
Denmark is one of the places where cremation is the clear norm, at about 86.48%[1] for people. For many families that makes cremation the obvious choice for their dog too, and it usually is a good one. Still, give it a moment's thought: would you like to scatter, bury or keep the ashes? That answer decides whether you need a decorative urn at all or just a simple, sealed container for now.
We take the Denmark rate from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for Aarhus, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
What the seasons mean for aftercare in Aarhus

What's allowed in Central Jutland after your dog dies
You don't need a permit to have your dog cremated, but what you do afterwards, burying them at home or scattering their ashes in a park, can be governed by local rules. Here's what applies in Central Jutland.
In Denmark, vets usually arrange cremation through a pet crematorium, with a choice between collective cremation and individual cremation with the ashes returned. Ask for the price for your dog's weight, whether collection from the clinic or your home is included and how long the return takes. If you're thinking of burying your dog on your own land, check your municipality's rules first.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If your dog dies at night, you don't need to call anyone until morning unless you want to. Move your dog to a cool room and cover them with a sheet.
- Put a towel or puppy pad underneath. It's normal for a dog's bladder or bowels to release after death.
- Gently curl your dog into a natural sleeping position during the first hours, while the body is still soft. Both the lifting later and the goodbye itself are easier that way.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory that serves Aarhus. Tell them your dog's approximate weight and where they are.
- Ask for the price in writing, including collection, private or communal cremation and the container for the ashes.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes, along with the name of whoever will get in touch once they're back.
Honoring your dog after the cremation
Aarhus has a mild, damp, windy climate, with cool summers and winters that hover around freezing. That gives you a little more time than in hot climates, but your pet's body should still be wrapped and kept in the coolest room, and collection arranged within a day or two. On a warm summer day, ice packs help. Cold nights on a balcony are not a substitute for a cool room.
