Dog Cremation in India: what to know
Families in India often find the hardest part isn't the decision itself but not knowing who to call. Your vet is the usual first contact and can arrange everything. If you'd rather choose the crematorium yourself, you can, and we can email you options for your area.
Families in India tend to ask the same three things first: how much, how long, and how can I be sure it's really my dog who comes home. Prices depend on weight and the type of cremation, the ashes often come back within about two weeks, and identification comes down to the provider's tagging system. The city pages below add the local detail.

The local attitude to cremation
A high cremation rate, about 80%[1] for people in India, also means some local funeral homes offer pet cremation themselves or partner with a pet crematory. That can be a comfortable route if your family already knows a funeral director. Ask them what you'd ask any provider: where the cremation physically takes place, whether your dog will be the only animal cremated at that time, and the expected return date.
The cremation figure for India comes from Wikipedia: Cremation by country (citing National Geographic) (2014). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
What dog cremation costs in India
Pet funeral customs in Asia are often more elaborate than in the West, and prices reflect that: a simple cremation may be modest, while a full funeral with a ceremony and columbarium niche costs considerably more. The table shows published examples from the region.
Hong Kong shows how much prices move with weight: one provider lists basic individual cremation at about HKD 1,300 for a small pet and HKD 3,000 for a 20 to 30 kg dog[2], rising to HKD 6,000 for dogs over 50 kg[3]. Wherever you are, give your dog's weight when you ask India providers for quotes, and check whether collection and the return of the ashes are included.
| Place | Example | What's included |
|---|---|---|
| Singapore (10–20 kg dog) | SGD 260 communal / SGD 480 private | Columbarium niches extra |
| Hong Kong (20–30 kg dog) | HKD 3,000 individual | Premium packages up to HKD 10,900 |
| Japan (25–30 kg pet) | about JPY 80,000 | Funeral package with ceremony |

Burial and scattering rules for India
Public land adds its own layer. Parks, beaches, lakes and forests in India are run by different agencies, and each may take its own view on scattering ashes. Many allow it quietly and discreetly, some want a request made in advance, and a few don't allow it at all. If you have a special place in mind, a quick call or a look at the managing agency's website before the day saves an awkward surprise.
In India, dedicated pet crematoria exist in several larger cities, some run by animal welfare groups or local authorities, and some vets can arrange cremation. Availability is patchier in smaller towns. Ask whether the cremation is individual, whether the ashes are returned, what collection costs and how long the process takes.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- Book the appointment for a slot that works for each person who'd like to be present, and find out if a home visit is possible.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, rather than being handed the question while you're upset. The usual choices are a private cremation, a communal one or burial at home.
- Ask the vet to arrange collection, or tell them which crematory you've chosen yourself.
- Prepare a quiet space where your dog's own bed can go, plus a blanket and some treats they love.
- Settle paperwork and payment first where possible, so the moment after isn't interrupted by forms.
- Stay as long as you need after your dog has died. No one is going to rush you out.
- Check the written confirmation of the cremation type and return date before the team leaves.
Honoring your dog after the cremation
Memorial jewelry, glass art with a little ash inside, an engraved garden stone or a portrait painted from a favorite photo are all popular keepsakes. Most are made to order and take a few weeks, so there's no need to decide in the first days. If you think you'll want one later, keep the urn sealed until you're ready and ask the maker how much ash they need.
The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask
Where can I scatter my dog's ashes in India?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest. Parks, beaches and public land usually have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot, scatter downwind and away from paths, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake urn.
How much does dog cremation cost in India?
Prices across India depend mostly on your dog's size and whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade. Big-city providers can charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
How many communities do you cover in India?
We currently have local dog cremation guides for 3 communities in India, including Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how pickup usually works there.
Do I need a permit to have my dog cremated in India?
No. Families don't need a permit to have a dog cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your dog's body at home or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part before you go ahead.
How long does it take to get my dog's ashes back in India?
Many families receive their dog's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where dogs travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
Can I bury my dog at home in India?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the state or country rules. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your dog with you wherever you go.
