Most of what happens after a dog dies is up to you, but not quite all of it. In India, as elsewhere, rules come into play when you want to bury a body or scatter ashes somewhere other than your own garden. If your plan is a private cremation and an urn on a shelf, there's almost nothing to check. If it involves digging or scattering, the points below are worth a minute.
In India, dedicated pet crematoria exist in several larger cities, some run by animal welfare groups or local authorities, and some vets can arrange cremation. Availability is patchier in smaller towns. Ask whether the cremation is individual, whether the ashes are returned, what collection costs and how long the process takes.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- Get help lifting. Two people are needed for a big dog, and folding a sheet or blanket into a sling is kinder on everyone, your dog included.
- Move your dog to a cool spot near the door, lying on something waterproof and covered with a blanket.
- Call a provider that can handle a big dog and give them the approximate weight, the number of steps and any tight turns.
- Ask whether they'll bring a stretcher and send two people, and check if heavier dogs cost extra.
- Confirm private or communal and the full price, including the urn, which will need to be larger for a big dog.
- Take your keepsakes now: a snip of fur, a nose print or a paw impression.

Delhi's summers are among the hottest of any big city, often above 40°C in May and June, followed by the humid monsoon. What happens if my dog dies at night or on a weekend in Delhi?
Keep your dog somewhere cool and call your nearest emergency vet; in a city like Delhi there's usually one open around the clock. They can hold your dog until your regular vet or crematory opens, or arrange collection themselves. You don't need to decide on cremation that night.
Should my other dog see the body before collection?
