In Italy, cremation is chosen for just 38.16%[1] or so of people, so you may be the first in your circle to bring a dog's ashes home, and friends may not quite know what to say about an urn. That's fine. Cremation is simply another way of caring for your dog, and many families here blend it with tradition by burying the urn on family land or in a pet cemetery.

Heat, cold and collection times in Bari
Wherever you are, the rule is the same: keep your dog cool, indoors and out of direct sun until they're collected. In warm weather, ask for collection within the day. In cold weather you have a little more time, but frozen ground can make home burial impossible until spring.

Rules for pets after death are usually simple, but they're set at more than one level: Apulia, then your city, county or council, and sometimes a homeowners' association or landlord. The strictest one applies. If you're thinking about a home burial, check all of them; if you're choosing cremation, the rules mostly affect where you scatter the ashes afterwards.
In Italy, pet cremation is widely available through private pet crematoria, and your vet can usually arrange collection. Ask whether the cremation is individual (individuale, ashes returned) or collective (collettiva), and for the price for your dog's weight. Rules on burying pets on private land are set regionally and locally, so check with your comune before digging.
If it's happening now: a short plan
- If your dog dies at the clinic, you don't have to decide on aftercare before you leave. Ask the team to keep your dog in their cold room while you think it over.
- Ask for time alone with your dog in a quiet room first. Most clinics in Bari will make space, even on a busy day.
- Ask which crematory the clinic uses and the price of both private and communal cremation for a dog the size of yours.
- Take the collar home with you, and see if the nurses are able to press a paw print or clip a little fur for you.

Can I get my dog's ashes delivered to my home in Bari?

Do I have to use the crematory my vet recommends?
