Families in Italy often find the hardest part isn't the decision itself but not knowing who to call. Your vet is the usual first contact and can arrange everything. If you'd rather choose the crematorium yourself, you can, and we can email you options for your area.
Few owners compare pet crematoria before choosing, usually because the decision arrives at the worst possible moment; in the UK, only about 9% did[1]. In Italy, a little planning changes that. If your dog is elderly, getting two quotes now, one from the crematorium your vet uses and one from another provider, means the choice on the day is already made.

Local habits around cremation and burial
In Italy, where only about 38.16%[2] of people are cremated, pet crematories can be further apart than in high-cremation areas. That can mean a longer wait for the ashes or a mileage charge for collection. It doesn't mean worse care. Ask your vet which crematory they work with, how far away it is and whether they collect on set days, so you know what to expect before you agree.

What dog cremation costs in Italy
In Italy, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium. You can also contact a crematorium directly. Ask for the price of individual (private) and collective (communal) cremation for your dog's weight.
Some European pet insurers contribute to cremation: four Dutch insurers offer some reimbursement[3], for example. In Germany, collective cremation is listed at about €85 to €205 and individual at €165 to €375[4]. Before you pay in Italy, check your policy and ask the crematorium for a written price for your dog's weight, including any charge for collection from your home or vet.

Before you bury or scatter in Italy
You don't need a permit to have your dog cremated, but what you do afterwards, burying them at home or scattering their ashes in a park, can be governed by local rules. Here's what applies in Italy.
In Italy, pet cremation is widely available through private pet crematoria, and your vet can usually arrange collection. Ask whether the cremation is individual (individuale, ashes returned) or collective (collettiva), and for the price for your dog's weight. Rules on burying pets on private land are set regionally and locally, so check with your comune before digging.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your dog dies at the clinic, nothing about aftercare has to be settled before you walk out. The team can hold your dog in the clinic's cold room for a while so you can think.
- Ask for time alone with your dog in a quiet room first. Most clinics in Italy will make space, even on a busy day.
- Ask which crematory the clinic uses and the price of both private and communal cremation for a dog the size of yours.
- Take the collar home with you, and see if the nurses are able to press a paw print or clip a little fur for you.
- Call back within a day or two with your decision. Should you prefer another provider, that provider can pick your dog up from the clinic.
- Ask how the ashes will come back: to the clinic, to your door or for pickup at the crematory.
Honoring your dog after the cremation
Some Italy families find it helps to do something with their hands: framing a favorite photo with the collar, filling a memory box with tags, toys and the last lead, or planting a shrub that flowers around their dog's birthday. There's no right way. If children are grieving too, let them choose or make something of their own.

Where can I scatter my dog's ashes in Italy?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest. Parks, beaches and public land usually have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot, scatter downwind and away from paths, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake urn.

Can I bury my dog at home in Italy?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the state or country rules. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your dog with you wherever you go.

Do I need a permit to have my dog cremated in Italy?
No. Families don't need a permit to have a dog cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your dog's body at home or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part before you go ahead.
How long does it take to get my dog's ashes back in Italy?
Many families receive their dog's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where dogs travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
