Most Milanese live in apartments, from the courtyard buildings with shared balcony walkways known as case di ringhiera to modern towers in Porta Nuova and CityLife. If your pet dies at home, think about lifts, narrow stairwells and where a vehicle can stop on a busy street or in a restricted traffic zone. Many Milan dog owners rent, and that quietly shapes the decision. Leases and building rules rarely allow burial in a shared yard or courtyard, and some landlords don't want remains buried on the property at all. Cremation sidesteps all of that: your dog's ashes can move with you to the next apartment, the next city or a family garden years from now. If a neighbor or doorman asks, a simple "our dog has died and someone is coming to help" is enough.

The local attitude to cremation
Lower cremation rates (around 38.16%[1] in Italy) often go with more land per household, and that changes the practical picture for dogs. A grave on your own property may be easy here. Before you dig, think about who will look after the spot if the land is sold or passed on, and whether digging a big dog's grave by hand is realistic. Burying an urn is a far lighter task.

What Lombardy allows: burial, scattering and more
Renters and homeowners in Lombardy face different questions. If you rent, your lease and landlord decide whether anything can be buried in the yard, and the answer is usually no. If you own, local ordinances and any homeowners' association or building rules sit on top of what Lombardy allows. Cremation needs nobody's permission, and the ashes can go wherever you move next.
In Italy, pet cremation is widely available through private pet crematoria, and your vet can usually arrange collection. Ask whether the cremation is individual (individuale, ashes returned) or collective (collettiva), and for the price for your dog's weight. Rules on burying pets on private land are set regionally and locally, so check with your comune before digging.
If it's happening now: a short plan
- Take a breath. Nothing has to happen in the next hour. If your dog died at home, lay them on a towel in a cool room and close their eyes if you can.
- Take anything you want to keep now: a paw print, a clipping of fur, their collar and tags.
- Call your vet, or the emergency clinic if it's after hours, and let them know. If you're not certain your dog has died they can confirm it, and they'll walk you through how their aftercare works.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. This is the choice that shapes everything else, including the price.
- Arrange collection, whether from the clinic or your front door, and get the full price put in writing.
- Choose what the ashes come home in, or keep the simple container for now and choose an urn later.
- Let yourself grieve. Tell the people who knew your dog, and put the lead away when you're ready, not before.
Remembering your dog in Milan
Milan has hot, humid summers and cold, often foggy winters typical of the Po Valley. In July and August, apartments can stay very warm even at night, so move your pet to the coolest room and lay them on a towel over frozen packs. In winter a cool room gives you more time. Almost nobody in central Milan has garden space, which is one reason cremation is the usual choice for pets.

Ask the provider how they track each animal. Careful crematories use a numbered tag, often metal, that stays with your dog from collection through cremation and comes back with the ashes, along with a certificate. Ask whether private means your dog is alone in the chamber, as some providers use partitioned cremation with several animals separated. Get the answer in writing.
Can I be there for my dog's cremation in Milan?
Some providers offer a witnessed cremation, where you can be present as it begins. Not all do, and it usually costs more and needs booking ahead. If it matters to you, mention it on your first call so they can tell you what's possible near Milan.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation?
In a private cremation your dog is cremated alone and the ashes returned are only theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and ashes aren't returned; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Private typically costs about twice as much.
