Cremation in Lombardy, and what it means for dog owners
Burial runs deep in Lombardy, with only about 38.16%[1] of people cremated. For a dog, a grave in the yard or on family land is still a very common choice, and a perfectly loving one. If you're leaning towards cremation instead, you won't be alone: many families choose it because it keeps options open, allowing a burial of the ashes later or a move without leaving their dog behind.
Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Lombardy rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.
What dog cremation costs in Lombardy
Published prices give a feel for the range. In France, a 20 kg dog costs about €70 to €120 for collective cremation and €150 to €250 for individual[2]; in the Netherlands the averages are about €200 and €300[3]. Prices in Lombardy depend on local providers and your dog's weight, so ask for a written quote that shows collection, the cremation and the urn separately.
Across Europe, dog cremation prices vary by country but follow the same logic everywhere: collective cremation costs roughly half as much as individual cremation, and bigger dogs cost more. The table shows published examples from several countries to give you a feel for Italy.
| Country | Collective (communal) | Individual (private) |
|---|---|---|
| Germany | €85 to €205 | €165 to €375 |
| France (20 kg dog) | €70 to €120 | €150 to €250 |
| Netherlands (average) | about €200 | about €300 |
| Ireland (up to 10 kg) | n/a | from €250 |
| Norway (1–20 kg) | from NOK 1,190 | NOK 3,790 |

Local rules in Lombardy
Rules for pets after death are usually simple, but they're set at more than one level: Lombardy, then your city, county or council, and sometimes a homeowners' association or landlord. The strictest one applies. If you're thinking about a home burial, check all of them; if you're choosing cremation, the rules mostly affect where you scatter the ashes afterwards.
In Italy, pet cremation is widely available through private pet crematoria, and your vet can usually arrange collection. Ask whether the cremation is individual (individuale, ashes returned) or collective (collettiva), and for the price for your dog's weight. Rules on burying pets on private land are set regionally and locally, so check with your comune before digging.
A simple checklist for the next two days
- Take a breath. There is no clock running on the first hour. When a dog dies at home, settle them onto a towel somewhere cool and, if you're able, gently close their eyes.
- Take anything you want to keep now: a paw print, a clipping of fur, their collar and tags.
- Call your vet, or the emergency clinic if it's after hours, and let them know. If you're not certain your dog has died they can confirm it, and they'll walk you through how their aftercare works.
- Decide on private or communal cremation. Every other decision, the cost included, follows from this one.
- Arrange collection, whether from the clinic or your front door, and get the full price put in writing.
- Choose what the ashes come home in, or keep the simple container for now and choose an urn later.
- Let yourself grieve. Share the news with everyone who loved your dog, and leave the lead by the door until you feel like moving it.
Memorials and keepsakes for your dog
A tree planted in the garden, a clay paw print on the mantel or a donation to a Lombardy shelter in your dog's name are all lovely ways to remember them. Some families in Lombardy mark the anniversary with a walk along their dog's old route.

Questions people ask
How much does dog cremation cost in Lombardy?
Prices across Lombardy depend mostly on your dog's size and whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade. Big-city providers can charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.
Can a vet come to my home for euthanasia anywhere in Lombardy?
In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and many also arrange cremation afterwards. In rural parts of Lombardy, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may be willing to visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask. Book as early as you can, as diaries fill up.
Is dog cremation cheaper in small towns in Lombardy?
Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can add up quickly. City providers offer more choice and faster service, sometimes at a premium. Compare written totals rather than assuming either way.
Where can I scatter my dog's ashes in Lombardy?
Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest. Parks, beaches and public land usually have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot, scatter downwind and away from paths, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake urn.
Do I need a permit to have my dog cremated in Lombardy?
No. Families don't need a permit to have a dog cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your dog's body at home or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part before you go ahead.
Can I bury my dog at home in Lombardy?
Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the state or country rules. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your dog with you wherever you go.
