Arranging dog cremation in Florence

Florence, Tuscany

Your dog's aftercare options around Florence

Florence sits in a bowl surrounded by hills, and summers are very hot, often well above 35°C, while winters are cool and damp. In summer, cool your pet quickly: shutters closed, a tiled floor, a towel and cold packs. Summer tourist traffic also slows movement around the city, so contact your vet or a provider as soon as you can.

A garden grave is rarely realistic in Florence, where most families have a balcony rather than a garden, and Tuscan and municipal rules decide where it is allowed at all. Most Florentines therefore choose cremation, either individually, so the ashes come home, or communally. A pet cemetery on the edge of the city is another option for families who want a place to visit. Your vet will know what operates nearby.

Some Florence providers are based just outside the city limits, near Bologna or along main roads out of town, because crematories need space and permits. That's normal. What matters is whether they collect from your address and how long the round trip takes for the ashes to come back.

With roughly 382,000 residents, Florence is the largest of the 2 Tuscany communities we cover. Some of the providers who serve Florence are based about 50 miles away in Bologna, the nearest larger centre, so collection times reflect that drive.

Families in Florence often end up using a provider from Siena (31 miles), Bologna (50 miles) and Portofino (108 miles). That is normal: crematories serve a radius, not a single town, and the drive is priced into collection.

38.16%[1]

In 2023, 38.16% of deaths in Italy were cremated (91 crematoria).

$260[2]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for private dog cremation at $260 (range $206-$473).

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

The numbers above come from CareCredit (Synchrony) and Embrace Pet Insurance, if you'd like to read the original sources.

Local habits around cremation and burial

Only about 38.16%[1] of people in Italy are cremated, so burial remains the local tradition. For dogs, that often means a spot in the garden or on family land. Cremation is still widely available, though, and many families choose it because it lets them keep their dog close even if they move.

The Italy percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Florence, not as a count of pets.

Florence weather and timing

If your dog passes at home in Florence and nobody answers the phone for several hours, you can still buy real time. A tiled floor, closed curtains and towel-wrapped ice packs along the back and belly slow things down considerably. Replace the ice as it melts, keep the room door shut and note roughly when your dog died, as the provider may ask.

Seasonal scene for planning aftercare in Florence

Budgeting for your dog's cremation

Published prices give a feel for the range. In France, a 20 kg dog costs about €70 to €120 for collective cremation and €150 to €250 for individual[4]; in the Netherlands the averages are about €200 and €300[5]. Prices in Florence depend on local providers and your dog's weight, so ask for a written quote that shows collection, the cremation and the urn separately.

What's allowed in Tuscany after your dog dies

Most of what happens after a dog dies is up to you, but not quite all of it. In Tuscany, as elsewhere, rules come into play when you want to bury a body or scatter ashes somewhere other than your own garden. If your plan is a private cremation and an urn on a shelf, there's almost nothing to check. If it involves digging or scattering, the points below are worth a minute.

In Italy, pet cremation is widely available through private pet crematoria, and your vet can usually arrange collection. Ask whether the cremation is individual (individuale, ashes returned) or collective (collettiva), and for the price for your dog's weight. Rules on burying pets on private land are set regionally and locally, so check with your comune before digging.

The first 48 hours, step by step

  1. Book the appointment for a slot that works for each person who'd like to be present, and find out if a home visit is possible.
  2. Decide on aftercare beforehand, so you're not asked to choose in the moment. Private cremation, communal cremation or home burial are the usual options.
  3. Ask the vet to arrange collection, or let them know the name of the crematory you've already picked.
  4. Prepare a quiet space with your dog's bed, a blanket and a few favorite treats.
  5. Settle paperwork and payment first where possible, so the moment after isn't interrupted by forms.
  6. Stay as long as you need once your dog has gone. Nobody will hurry you.
  7. Check the written confirmation while the team is still there: cremation type and the date the ashes are due back.

Keeping your dog close

Most Florentines live in apartments, many in centuries-old buildings in the historic centre with steep stone stairs and no lift, while others live in the suburbs or in the hills toward Fiesole. Cars need a permit to enter the historic centre's ZTL, so a van may not reach your door. Tell the provider which piazza or corner a van can reach. Most Florentine vets can also arrange cremation for you.

Questions people ask

Where are the providers that serve Florence actually based?

Some are local, and some run from Bologna, about 50 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for Florence and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Florence?

Usually yes. Siena is about 31 miles away, Bologna is about 50 miles away and Portofino is about 108 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.

Is cremation common in Italy?

For people, yes: about 38.16%[1] of Italy deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Florence follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

How much does dog cremation cost in Florence?

Prices depend on your dog's size and whether you choose individual or communal cremation. Published prices in the UK and Europe typically range from about £150 to £300 for an individual cremation, with communal much cheaper. Ask for a written quote that lists collection and the container.

Can I be there for my dog's cremation in Florence?

Some providers offer a witnessed cremation, where you can be present as it begins. Not all do, and it usually costs more and needs booking ahead. If it matters to you, mention it on your first call so they can tell you what's possible near Florence.

What's the difference between private and communal cremation?

In a private cremation your dog is cremated alone and the ashes returned are only theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and ashes aren't returned; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Private typically costs about twice as much.
