Portofino, Liguria
Who handles dog aftercare in Portofino
Most Portofino homes are flats in old buildings or villas on steep terraced land, and the promontory is part of a regional natural park. Burying a pet is rarely practical here, so cremation is the usual choice. A vet in the Tigullio area can explain the local rules and help arrange cremation for cats, birds and other companion animals. In summer, when day visitors fill the lanes, early morning is often the calmest time for a collection.
Portofino is a tiny harbour village on the Ligurian coast, with a few hundred permanent residents in tall painted houses around the piazzetta and villas hidden on the wooded promontory. The only road in is a narrow coastal route from Santa Margherita Ligure, and parking is scarce. When you ask about collection, explain exactly where you are and whether a vehicle can get close, or whether a boat is easier.
One advantage of a town the size of Portofino is that people know each other. Your vet is likely to know the crematory staff personally and can tell you honestly how they work. Don't be shy about asking what they'd choose for their own dog.
With roughly 400 residents, Portofino is the 2nd-largest of the 2 Liguria communities we cover. Genoa, roughly 15 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover Portofino run from there.
Portofino sits within easy reach of Genoa (15 miles, a larger centre), Milan (80 miles, a larger centre) and Turin (92 miles, a larger centre). A provider based in any of them will usually collect from Portofino; ask what the mileage adds to the bill.

Cremation in Italy, and what it means for dog owners
In Italy, cremation is chosen for just 38.16%[1] or so of people, so you may be the first in your circle to bring a dog's ashes home, and friends may not quite know what to say about an urn. That's fine. Cremation is simply another way of caring for your dog, and many families here blend it with tradition by burying the urn on family land or in a pet cemetery.
The Italy figure comes from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). It describes people, not pets, so read it as a sign of local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.
Portofino weather and timing
If your dog passes at home in Portofino and nobody answers the phone for several hours, you can still buy real time. A tiled floor, closed curtains and towel-wrapped ice packs along the back and belly slow things down considerably. Replace the ice as it melts, keep the room door shut and note roughly when your dog died, as the provider may ask.

What dog owners in Portofino typically pay
Published prices give a feel for the range. In France, a 20 kg dog costs about €70 to €120 for collective cremation and €150 to €250 for individual[4]; in the Netherlands the averages are about €200 and €300[5]. Prices in Portofino depend on local providers and your dog's weight, so ask for a written quote that shows collection, the cremation and the urn separately.
Rather than repeat the price table on every city page, we keep one for Liguria: Liguria costs. What each service includes is on the services page.

What's allowed in Liguria after your dog dies
Most of the decisions after a dog's death are yours to make. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Liguria and your local council or city may regulate.
In Italy, pet cremation is widely available through private pet crematoria, and your vet can usually arrange collection. Ask whether the cremation is individual (individuale, ashes returned) or collective (collettiva), and for the price for your dog's weight. Rules on burying pets on private land are set regionally and locally, so check with your comune before digging.
Step by step in Portofino
- Tell children the truth in simple words: your dog has died and won't come back. With young children, avoid "put to sleep", which can make bedtime frightening.
- Let each child choose whether to say goodbye, without pushing them toward either answer. Stroking the dog one last time, or leaving a picture they've drawn, can help.
- Give them a small job, like choosing the blanket or toy that goes with your dog.
- Arrange the vet visit or collection for a time when children who'd rather not watch can be with a trusted adult.
- Explain what happens next in plain terms: the dog is going to be cremated, and the ashes come back in a special box.
- Plan a small memorial together when the ashes have come home. A shrub in the garden or a jar of memories both work well.
Keeping your dog close
Liguria has mild winters and warm summers, with autumn storms that can bring heavy rain and landslides. A severe storm in 2018 badly damaged the coastal road and left the village with very limited access for a time. On a hot August day, a shuttered room with thick walls and wrapped ice packs is the right place for your pet while you arrange collection, allowing for the difficult access.

Questions people ask
Will I have to travel to Genoa to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Genoa (roughly 15 miles from Portofino) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Portofino?
Usually yes. Genoa is about 15 miles away, Milan is about 80 miles away and Turin is about 92 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Portofino page quote a human cremation rate?
Because it is the best local signal we have. Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) reports about 38.16%[1] of Italy residents are cremated. There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my dog?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[7]. Burial gives you a place to visit but depends on land and local rules; cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want to keep your dog close. You can also combine them by burying the ashes.
Can I be there for my dog's cremation in Portofino?
Some providers offer a witnessed cremation, where you can be present as it begins. Not all do, and it usually costs more and needs booking ahead. If it matters to you, mention it on your first call so they can tell you what's possible near Portofino.
How long until I get my dog's ashes back in Portofino?
Many families get their dog's ashes back within one to two weeks. In a large city it can be quicker; in a smaller town where the cremation happens in a regional centre like Genoa, it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.
