Planning around the weather in Nara
Weather matters most in the first day. If it's warm where you are in Nara, keep your dog indoors in the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and ask for collection within the day. Before you bury or scatter in Japan
Before you bury, scatter or plan a memorial, it's worth checking what Japan allows. You don't need a permit to have your dog cremated, and keeping ashes at home is allowed everywhere we know of. Burying a whole dog and scattering in public places are where rules come in, usually to protect water supplies and shared spaces.
In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, often with a short ceremony and the option of a temple columbarium. Ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨) rather than assuming it; some municipal collection routes don't return remains.
Your next steps, one at a time
- Book the appointment at a time when everyone who wants to be there can be, and ask whether the vet can come to your home.
- Decide on aftercare beforehand, rather than being handed the question while you're upset. The usual choices are a private cremation, a communal one or burial at home.
- Ask the vet to arrange collection, or tell them which crematory you've chosen yourself.
- Prepare a quiet space with your dog's bed, a blanket and a few favorite treats.
- Settle paperwork and payment first where possible, so the moment after isn't interrupted by forms.
- Stay as long as you need after your dog has died. No one is going to rush you out.
- Check the written confirmation while the team is still there: cremation type and the date the ashes are due back.
Remembering your dog, in Nara and beyond
