Dog Cremation in Japan

Dog Cremation in Japan: what to know

Families in Japan often find the hardest part isn't the decision itself but not knowing who to call. Your vet is the usual first contact and can arrange everything. If you'd rather choose the crematorium yourself, you can, and we can email you options for your area.

Dog cremation in Japan follows the same basic choices as anywhere: private cremation with ashes returned, or communal cremation without. What differs from country to country is how services are organised, what they cost and which rules apply to burial and scattering. This page covers Japan as a whole; each city page adds local detail.

We cover 18 communities in Japan, from Tokyo, Yokohama and Osaka to smaller towns.

What local cremation habits mean for you

In Japan, about 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, one of the higher rates around. Where cremation is this common, pet crematories tend to be plentiful and competitive, which is good news if you want to compare prices or need a witnessed cremation at short notice.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Japan rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

How much to budget in Japan

Pet funeral customs in Asia are often more elaborate than in the West, and prices reflect that: a simple cremation may be modest, while a full funeral with a ceremony and columbarium niche costs considerably more. The table shows published examples from the region.

In Japan, many pet funeral providers sell packages rather than a single cremation price: collection, a short ceremony, individual cremation, an urn and sometimes a niche. Packages can be good value, but compare them on the same basis. Ask for the price of individual cremation on its own, then choose extras. In Japan, communal cremation is often about half the price of individual services[2].

Rules worth knowing in Japan

Most of what happens after a dog dies is up to you, but not quite all of it. In Japan, as elsewhere, rules come into play when you want to bury a body or scatter ashes somewhere other than your own garden. If your plan is a private cremation and an urn on a shelf, there's almost nothing to check. If it involves digging or scattering, the points below are worth a minute.

In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, often with a short ceremony and the option of a temple columbarium. Ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨) rather than assuming it; some municipal collection routes don't return remains.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Book the appointment for a slot that works for each person who'd like to be present, and find out if a home visit is possible.
  2. Decide on aftercare beforehand, rather than being handed the question while you're upset. The usual choices are a private cremation, a communal one or burial at home.
  3. Ask the vet to arrange collection, or tell them which crematory you've chosen yourself.
  4. Prepare a quiet space with your dog's bed, a blanket and a few favorite treats.
  5. Settle paperwork and payment first where possible, so the moment after isn't interrupted by forms.
  6. Stay as long as you need after your dog has died. No one is going to rush you out.
  7. Check the written confirmation while the team is still there: cremation type and the date the ashes are due back.

Memorials and keepsakes for your dog

Memorial jewelry, glass art with a little ash inside, an engraved garden stone or a portrait painted from a favorite photo are all popular keepsakes. Most are made to order and take a few weeks, so there's no need to decide in the first days. If you think you'll want one later, keep the urn sealed until you're ready and ask the maker how much ash they need.

Questions people ask

Can I bury my dog at home in Japan?

Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the state or country rules. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your dog with you wherever you go.

Is dog cremation common in Japan?

For people, about 99.97%[1] of deaths in Japan end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among families who want to keep their dog close, cremation is now the most common choice, especially in towns and suburbs.

Can a vet come to my home for euthanasia anywhere in Japan?

In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and many also arrange cremation afterwards. In rural parts of Japan, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may be willing to visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask. Book as early as you can, as diaries fill up.

How long does it take to get my dog's ashes back in Japan?

Many families receive their dog's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where dogs travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.

What if my dog dies while we're traveling in Japan?

Contact the closest clinic or emergency animal hospital; staff there can check your dog and keep them in cold storage while you think. You can then use a crematory near where you are and ask for the ashes to be sent home by tracked delivery, or drive your dog home in a cool car if the distance is short. The city pages below describe local conditions across Japan to help you decide.

Should I get a second quote for dog cremation in Japan?

If time allows, yes. Prices for the same private cremation can differ noticeably between providers in Japan, especially once collection and the urn are added. Ask each for a written, itemized total for your dog's weight. If it all feels like too much right now and you'd rather not shop around, going with your vet's usual provider is a perfectly reasonable choice.
