Pet crematories themselves are lightly regulated in many places, so it's up to you to ask good questions about identification and private cremation. What rules in Japan mostly cover is what happens next: where a dog can be buried and where ashes can be scattered. The notes below cover the main points; your vet or local council can confirm anything specific to your address.
In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, often with a short ceremony and the option of a temple columbarium. Ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨) rather than assuming it; some municipal collection routes don't return remains.
