Dog Cremation in Tokyo

Dog Cremation in Tokyo: what to know

In Tokyo, as in most places, the vet is where the process usually starts. That's no bad thing: vets see loss often and have working relationships with local crematories. But you're not obliged to use the provider your vet suggests. Calling a crematory directly, or asking for a second quote, is normal and can save money for exactly the same service.

Across the 3 Tokyo communities we cover, the same few questions come up again and again: how fast can my dog be collected, what does private cremation really cost, and how will I know the ashes are my dog's? The answers differ more between a big city and a small town than between one corner of Tokyo and another, so read this overview, then your own city's page.

We cover 3 communities in Tokyo, from Tokyo, Setagaya and Minato.

How Tokyo thinks about cremation

In Tokyo, where roughly 99.97%[1] of people are cremated, many families already have a relative's urn at home or a scattering place in mind. That shared experience makes it easier to plan for a dog. Ask the same practical questions you'd ask for a person: who carries out the cremation, how identity is checked at each stage and what paperwork comes back with the ashes.

Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) publishes the Tokyo rate we quote. Read it as the local custom around cremation rather than as pet data.

Dog cremation prices for Tokyo families

In Tokyo, private cremation is the usual choice for families who want their dog's ashes, and many providers offer a short farewell ceremony as part of the package. Ask exactly what's included before you compare prices.

Prices across Asia vary widely with what's included. In Singapore, a 10 to 20 kg dog costs about SGD 260 for communal cremation[2] or SGD 480 for private[3], with columbarium niches extra. In Tokyo, one memorial park charges about ¥38,500 for individual cremation of a 20 to 30 kg dog and ¥60,500 for an attended cremation with a monk chanting[4]. Ask Tokyo providers exactly what their package covers.

Checking the rules in Tokyo before you decide

It helps to separate two sets of rules in Tokyo: those for a whole body and those for ashes. Burying a dog's body usually comes with conditions on where and how, mainly to protect groundwater and wells. Ashes are treated far more lightly almost everywhere, because they're dry, sterile bone mineral. That's why many families who want a grave to visit choose cremation first and then bury the urn.

In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, often with a short ceremony and the option of a temple columbarium. Ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨) rather than assuming it; some municipal collection routes don't return remains.

If it's happening now: a short plan

  1. If your dog dies while you're away from home, start by locating the closest vet or emergency hospital. They'll confirm your dog has died and keep them safely while you decide.
  2. Decide whether to bring your dog home or cremate where you are. A cremation nearby, with the ashes posted home afterwards, is usually simpler than driving a long way with your dog.
  3. If you drive your dog home, run the air conditioning, put a blanket under your dog and, if it's warm, don't stop for long.
  4. Ask a local crematory if the ashes can be shipped by a tracked service that needs a signature, and how much extra that costs.
  5. Check before crossing a border. Taking a dog's body from one country into another may need documents; carrying ashes is generally much more straightforward, but each airline has its own policy on urns.
  6. Tell your own vet when you're back in Tokyo so they can update your dog's records and stop reminders.

Ways to remember your dog locally

Keeping your dog's ashes at home is the most popular choice, and there's no time limit. When you're ready, you might move them into an engraved urn, share a little with family, or bury them in a place you'll always be able to visit.

The services page compares what each option includes, the planning tools turn your animal's details into figures, and the poll results show what other families chose. All locations lists every region we cover.

Questions people ask

Is dog cremation cheaper in small towns in Tokyo?

Sometimes, but not always. Small-town vets often have lower fees and a set collection day with a regional crematory, which keeps costs down. On the other hand, mileage charges for a home collection can add up quickly. City providers offer more choice and faster service, sometimes at a premium. Compare written totals rather than assuming either way.

Can I bury my dog at home in Tokyo?

Often yes, with conditions such as burial depth, distance from wells and waterways and whether you own the land. Cities and homeowner associations can be stricter than the state or country rules. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your dog with you wherever you go.

Is dog cremation common in Tokyo?

For people, about 99.97%[1] of deaths in Tokyo end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow local habits. Among families who want to keep their dog close, cremation is now the most common choice, especially in towns and suburbs.

How much does dog cremation cost in Tokyo?

Prices across Tokyo depend mostly on your dog's size and whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade. Big-city providers can charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.

Can a vet come to my home for euthanasia anywhere in Tokyo?

In and around larger cities, mobile vets who offer home euthanasia are common, and many also arrange cremation afterwards. In rural parts of Tokyo, coverage is patchier and travel fees are more likely. Your regular vet may be willing to visit even if they don't advertise it, so ask. Book as early as you can, as diaries fill up.

What if my dog dies while we're traveling in Tokyo?

Contact the closest clinic or emergency animal hospital; staff there can check your dog and keep them in cold storage while you think. You can then use a crematory near where you are and ask for the ashes to be sent home by tracked delivery, or drive your dog home in a cool car if the distance is short. The city pages below describe local conditions across Tokyo to help you decide.
