How Japan thinks about cremation
Japan is one of the places where cremation is the clear norm, at about 99.97%[1] for people. For many families that makes cremation the obvious choice for their dog too, and it usually is a good one. Still, give it a moment's thought: would you like to scatter, bury or keep the ashes? That answer decides whether you need a decorative urn at all or just a simple, sealed container for now.

Nagoya weather and timing
Weather matters most in the first day. If it's warm where you are in Nagoya, keep your dog indoors in the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and ask for collection within the day. Before you bury or scatter in Aichi
Rules about pets after death are set locally, so it's worth knowing the basics for Aichi before you decide. Cremation itself is straightforward everywhere; burial and scattering are where local rules come in.
In Japan, pet funerals are an established tradition, often with a short ceremony and the option of a temple columbarium. Ask whether the ashes are returned (返骨) rather than assuming it; some municipal collection routes don't return remains.

Nagoya's summers are hot and humid, often among the hottest of Japan's big cities, with the rainy season in June and July and typhoons into autumn. A pet's body needs cooling within hours: wrap your pet in a towel, place ice packs near the belly and back, and keep the room air-conditioned. Winters are cold but mostly dry, giving you a little more time, though arranging aftercare in the next day or so is still advisable.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Nagoya?
Usually yes. Hamamatsu is about 57 miles away, Kyoto is about 65 miles away and Nara is about 71 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Why does the Nagoya page quote a human cremation rate?

There is no official pet equivalent, and inventing one would be worse than quoting a real, clearly labelled number.
Is it legal to bury my dog at home in Aichi?
In many places it is, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the property. Rules vary within Aichi too, so check with your city or county before digging. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your dog with you.

Will a pet collection team come to an apartment building in Nagoya?
Yes. Collection services in big cities regularly work in apartment buildings and high-rises. Tell them the floor, whether there's a service elevator, where they can park and whether building staff need notice. For a larger dog, ask for two people and a stretcher. Many families find it more private to arrange collection at a quieter time of day.
Should I choose cremation or burial for my dog?
Surveys in the US and UK point the same way: roughly two-thirds of bereaved owners choose cremation and about 30% choose burial[8]. Burial gives you a place to visit but depends on land and local rules; cremation is simpler if you rent, might move or want to keep your dog close. You can also combine them by burying the ashes.
