San Sebastian, Basque Country
Your dog's aftercare options around San Sebastian
Most pets in San Sebastián live in apartments, many in older buildings in the Parte Vieja, Gros and Amara with narrow stairs and small lifts. Few families here rely on a car for everyday trips, so a provider that collects from your home can matter more than one that's cheap. When you ask for options, mention your neighborhood, floor and whether the lift will take a carrier or a larger pet.
San Sebastián is mild and wet for much of the year, with the Atlantic bringing frequent rain and cool, grey spells even in summer. That mild climate means a little more time to decide on aftercare than in southern Spain, but a pet's body should still be kept cool: a towel, ice packs wrapped in cloth, and the coolest room in the flat. Aim to arrange collection within a day.
If you'd rather compare, it's worth looking a little further afield too. Providers serving Bilbao may also cover San Sebastian, and a slightly longer drive can sometimes mean a witnessed cremation or a faster return of the ashes.
San Sebastian is home to about 186,000 people, the 2nd-largest of the 2 Basque Country communities we cover. Pamplona, roughly 39 miles off, is the closest larger centre, and a share of the providers who cover San Sebastian run from there.
For a second opinion on price, Pamplona (39 miles), Bilbao (48 miles) and Santander (92 miles) are close enough that their providers cover San Sebastian routinely. Two written quotes tell you more than any price list.
50.11%[1]

3-5% of body weight[3]

Cremation in Spain: why it matters for your dog
Cremation is now the majority choice for people in Spain, at about 50.11%[1], but burial still has deep roots here. You'll find both traditions among dog owners too. Neither is more "proper" than the other; what matters is what feels right for your dog and your family.
We take the Spain rate from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It is a human statistic; there is no equivalent pet figure for San Sebastian, and we would rather show a real number than invent one.
How San Sebastian's weather affects the first few hours
If you're not sure what the weather will do in San Sebastian over the next day or two, plan for warmth rather than cold: a cool room, a towel beneath your dog and collection within about 24 hours are sensible anywhere. It's also fair to ask the provider how your dog will be kept cool once collected, whether that's refrigeration at the clinic or at the crematory. A good provider will answer straight away.

What dog cremation costs in San Sebastian
In San Sebastian, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium. You can also contact a crematorium directly. Ask for the price of individual (private) and collective (communal) cremation for your dog's weight.

Rules worth knowing in Basque Country
Rules for pets after death are usually simple, but they're set at more than one level: Basque Country, then your city, county or council, and sometimes a homeowners' association or landlord. The strictest one applies. If you're thinking about a home burial, check all of them; if you're choosing cremation, the rules mostly affect where you scatter the ashes afterwards.
In Spain, most vets work with a pet crematorium and can arrange individual cremation (incineración individual), which returns your dog's ashes, or collective cremation, which doesn't. Rules on burying pets at home vary by region and municipality and are often strict in towns, so cremation is the usual choice. Ask for a written price for your dog's weight.
The first 48 hours, step by step
- If your dog dies at the clinic, nothing about aftercare has to be settled before you walk out. The team can hold your dog in the clinic's cold room for a while so you can think.
- Ask for time alone with your dog in a quiet room first. Most clinics in San Sebastian will make space, even on a busy day.
- Ask which crematory the clinic uses and the price of both private and communal cremation for a dog the size of yours.
- Take the collar home with you, and ask the nurses whether they can make a paw impression or save some fur.
- Call back within a day or two with your decision. Should you prefer another provider, that provider can pick your dog up from the clinic.
- Ask how the ashes will come back: delivered to your home, returned to the clinic or collected from the crematory.
Memorials and keepsakes for your dog
Pets are part of daily life in San Sebastián, seen along the promenade at La Concha and on the paths up Monte Urgull and Ulía. Many families like to remember a pet by one of those places. If you're thinking of scattering ashes by the sea or on the hills, ask the city or the land manager about any rules, and consider keeping some ashes for an urn at home.

Questions people ask
Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from San Sebastian?
Usually yes. Pamplona is about 39 miles away, Bilbao is about 48 miles away and Santander is about 92 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Is cremation common in Spain?
For people, yes: about 50.11%[1] of Spain deaths end in cremation, according to Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in San Sebastian follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.
Where are the providers that serve San Sebastian actually based?
Some are local, and some run from Pamplona, about 39 miles away. That is normal for a city this size. What matters is the collection time they quote for San Sebastian and whether the drive is priced into the total, so ask both up front.
Is it legal to bury my dog at home in Basque Country?
In many places it is, with conditions such as depth, distance from water and whether you own the property. Rules vary within Basque Country too, so check with your city or county before digging. If you rent or might move, cremation lets you keep your dog with you.
Is dog cremation more common than burial in Basque Country?
For people, about 50.11%[1] of deaths in Spain end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow similar habits. For dogs, cremation is now the most common choice among families who want to keep their pet close, especially in towns and suburbs.
What's the difference between private and communal cremation?
In a private cremation your dog is cremated alone and the ashes returned are only theirs. In a communal cremation several animals are cremated together and ashes aren't returned; they're usually scattered in a memorial garden. Private typically costs about twice as much.
