How Spain thinks about cremation
Cremation is now chosen for about 50.11%[1] of people in Spain, but there are still plenty of places here where a backyard grave is how dogs have always been laid to rest. Neither tradition is wrong. What we'd suggest is simply choosing on purpose rather than by default: ask what each option costs and involves, then decide what fits your dog, your home and your family.

Timing your dog's aftercare in Santander's climate
Seasonal weather also shapes what happens afterwards. Scattering on a windy beach, or burying ashes in waterlogged or frozen soil, is harder than it sounds, so many families in Santander keep the urn at home for a while and choose a calm, dry day for any outdoor memorial. Before you bury or scatter in Cantabria
You don't need a permit to have your dog cremated, but what you do afterwards, burying them at home or scattering their ashes in a park, can be governed by local rules. Here's what applies in Cantabria.
In Spain, most vets work with a pet crematorium and can arrange individual cremation (incineración individual), which returns your dog's ashes, or collective cremation, which doesn't. Rules on burying pets at home vary by region and municipality and are often strict in towns, so cremation is the usual choice. Ask for a written price for your dog's weight.
What to do first, and what can wait
- If your dog dies at night, there's no reason to phone anyone before morning unless it would help you. Carry your dog somewhere cool and lay a sheet over them.
- Put a towel or puppy pad underneath. After death the bladder and bowels often let go, which is nothing to be alarmed by.
- Gently curl your dog into a natural sleeping position within the first few hours, before the body stiffens. It makes lifting, and the goodbye, easier.
- In the morning, call your vet or a crematory that serves Santander. Tell them your dog's approximate weight and where they are.
- Ask for the price in writing, including collection, private or communal cremation and the container for the ashes.
- Take a paw print, a lock of fur or their collar before collection if you'd like a keepsake.
- Write down the expected return date for the ashes and who will contact you when they're ready.

Can a provider from a neighbouring town collect from Santander?
Usually yes. Bilbao is about 46 miles away, San Sebastian is about 92 miles away and Oviedo is about 103 miles away, all inside a normal collection radius. Get the mileage written into the quote so there is no surprise on the day.
Will I have to travel to Bilbao to arrange things?
Not usually. Providers based in Bilbao (roughly 46 miles from Santander) collect from here as a matter of routine, and the paperwork is done by email or phone. If you want to be present for a witnessed cremation, that is when the drive matters.
Can I get my dog's ashes delivered to my home in Santander?
Many providers working in Santander will bring the ashes to your door, sometimes for a small fee, while others return them to your vet for you to pick up. If going back to the clinic would be hard, ask for delivery when you book. Some families prefer to collect the ashes from the crematory in person, which is also a chance to see urns before choosing one.
Should my other dog see the body before collection?
Many owners let their other dogs sniff and sit with the body for a few minutes, and it does no harm. Some dogs show interest, others walk away; both are normal.
