Dog Cremation in Catalonia

Catalonia, Spain

Dog Cremation in Catalonia: what to know

Dog cremation across Catalonia works much the same way everywhere, but the details change with where you live. In the big cities you'll usually have several crematories, home-euthanasia vets and same-day collection to choose from. In smaller towns, the local vet typically arranges everything and sends dogs to a regional crematory, so the ashes can take a few extra days to come back.

If you're in Catalonia, the two things that most affect your dog's aftercare are distance and weather. Distance decides how quickly your dog can be collected and how long the ashes take to return; weather decides how urgent the first few hours are and whether a home burial is even possible in winter.

Local habits around cremation and burial

Faith and family custom can shape this choice more than cost. In Catalonia, a place where cremation accounts for about 50.11%[1] of human deaths, families whose congregation leans towards burial live alongside families who have cremated for generations. If faith matters to you, ask your minister or a community elder how others have marked a pet's death. Many families find a few words at a small gathering means a lot, whichever option they choose.

The cremation figure for Catalonia comes from Infobae, citing PANASEF (Spanish funeral services association) (2024). It counts people, not pets, so treat it as a guide to local attitudes rather than a pet statistic.

Dog cremation prices for Catalonia families

In Catalonia, as in most of Europe, your vet is usually the first point of contact and will arrange collection by a pet crematorium. You can also contact a crematorium directly. Ask for the price of individual (private) and collective (communal) cremation for your dog's weight.

Published prices give a feel for the range. In France, a 20 kg dog costs about €70 to €120 for collective cremation and €150 to €250 for individual[2]; in the Netherlands the averages are about €200 and €300[3]. Prices in Catalonia depend on local providers and your dog's weight, so ask for a written quote that shows collection, the cremation and the urn separately.

What's allowed in Catalonia after your dog dies

Most of the decisions after a dog's death are yours to make. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Catalonia and your local council or city may regulate.

In Spain, most vets work with a pet crematorium and can arrange individual cremation (incineración individual), which returns your dog's ashes, or collective cremation, which doesn't. Rules on burying pets at home vary by region and municipality and are often strict in towns, so cremation is the usual choice. Ask for a written price for your dog's weight.

What to do first, and what can wait

  1. Take a breath. There is no clock running on the first hour. When a dog dies at home, settle them onto a towel somewhere cool and, if you're able, gently close their eyes.
  2. Take anything you want to keep now: a paw print, a clipping of fur, their collar and tags.
  3. Call your vet, or the emergency clinic if it's after hours, and let them know. If you're not certain your dog has died they can confirm it, and they'll walk you through how their aftercare works.
  4. Decide on private or communal cremation. Every other decision, the cost included, follows from this one.
  5. Arrange collection, whether from the clinic or your front door, and get the full price put in writing.
  6. Choose what the ashes come home in, or accept the basic container to start with and pick an urn when you're ready.
  7. Let yourself grieve. Share the news with everyone who loved your dog, and leave the lead by the door until you feel like moving it.

Remembering your dog, in Catalonia and beyond

Some Catalonia families find it helps to do something with their hands: framing a favorite photo with the collar, filling a memory box with tags, toys and the last lead, or planting a shrub that flowers around their dog's birthday. There's no right way. If children are grieving too, let them choose or make something of their own.

Questions people ask

How many communities do you cover in Catalonia?

We currently have local dog cremation guides for 1 communities in Catalonia, including Barcelona. Each page covers local weather and timing, prices, rules and how pickup usually works there.

Where can I scatter my dog's ashes in Catalonia?

Private land with the owner's permission is the simplest. Parks, beaches and public land usually have their own rules, and some ask you to request permission first. Choose a quiet spot, scatter downwind and away from paths, and consider keeping a little back in a keepsake urn.

What if my dog dies while we're traveling in Catalonia?

Contact the closest clinic or emergency animal hospital; staff there can check your dog and keep them in cold storage while you think. You can then use a crematory near where you are and ask for the ashes to be sent home by tracked delivery, or drive your dog home in a cool car if the distance is short. The city pages below describe local conditions across Catalonia to help you decide.

How long does it take to get my dog's ashes back in Catalonia?

Many families receive their dog's ashes within one to two weeks. In large cities it can be faster; in rural areas where dogs travel to a regional crematory it may take a little longer. Ask for an expected return date when you book.

How much does dog cremation cost in Catalonia?

Prices across Catalonia depend mostly on your dog's size and whether you choose private or communal cremation, plus any home pickup or urn upgrade. Big-city providers can charge more for same-day collection, while rural areas may add mileage. Ask for an itemized written total before you agree.

Do I need a permit to have my dog cremated in Catalonia?

No. Families don't need a permit to have a dog cremated anywhere we cover. Any licensing applies to the crematory itself, and rules on burial and scattering are set separately. If you plan to bury your dog's body at home or scatter ashes on public land, check the local rules for that part before you go ahead.
