Dog cremation near Stockholm: costs and next steps

Stockholm, Sweden

Your dog's aftercare options around Stockholm

Stockholm's winters are long and dark, with cold snaps and snow, while summers are short and light, with long evenings. In winter a cool room gives you a little time if your pet dies at home, but keep the body away from radiators and on a blanket. Around midsummer and the July holiday weeks, when much of Sweden is on holiday, ask about timing and storage.

Stockholm is built across islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic, and most people in the inner city live in apartment buildings, often without a lift in the older blocks of Södermalm and Vasastan. Burying a pet at home is rarely an option here, so home collection and cremation is the usual choice. Mention stairs, entry codes and parking when you get in touch, since these affect how collection works.

A big metro usually means round-the-clock emergency hospitals, and that matters more than people realize. If your dog dies suddenly at 2 am in Stockholm, you can often take them to an emergency clinic that will confirm the death, keep your dog in a cold room and hold them until you decide on cremation. There may be a fee for holding and handling, so ask about it. You don't have to choose a crematory that night; call in the morning with a clearer head.

Stockholm's population is around 975,000.

84.69%[1]

In 2023, 84.69% of deaths in Sweden were cremated (58 crematoria).

$260[2]

CareCredit's 2025 cost study put the US national average for private dog cremation at $260 (range $206-$473).

3-5% of body weight[3]

Embrace notes cremated remains typically weigh about 3-5% of the pet's original body weight.

We built the this numbers from CareCredit (Synchrony) and Embrace Pet Insurance, and both are worth a look if you want the detail.

Cremation in Sweden, and what it means for dog owners

Sweden is one of the places where cremation is the clear norm, at about 84.69%[1] for people. For many families that makes cremation the obvious choice for their dog too, and it usually is a good one. Still, give it a moment's thought: would you like to scatter, bury or keep the ashes? That answer decides whether you need a decorative urn at all or just a simple, sealed container for now.

The Sweden percentage above is from Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023) and refers to human funerals. Treat it as context for Stockholm, not as a count of pets.

Seasons, collection and burial in Stockholm

Weather matters most in the first day. If it's warm where you are in Stockholm, keep your dog indoors in the coolest room, lay them on a towel over a hard floor and ask for collection within the day. If it's cold, you have a little more time, and an unheated room can safely hold your dog until the next morning. Either way, draw the curtains, keep other pets and young children supervised and don't feel you have to rush the goodbye.

What dog cremation costs in Stockholm

Across Europe, dog cremation prices vary by country but follow the same logic everywhere: collective cremation costs roughly half as much as individual cremation, and bigger dogs cost more. The table shows published examples from several countries to give you a feel for Sweden.

Burial and scattering rules for Sweden

Most of the decisions after a dog's death are yours to make. The exceptions are burial and scattering, which Sweden and your local council or city may regulate.

In Sweden, vets such as AniCura commonly quote euthanasia with collective cremation for a dog at SEK 2,000 to 6,000 depending on size, with separate (individual) cremation costing extra[5]. Ashes normally come back in 2-4 weeks[6], sometimes longer. Ask specifically for separate cremation if you want your dog's ashes returned, and confirm the price for your dog's weight in writing.

If it's happening now: a short plan

  1. If your dog has been hit by a car or hurt outside, rush them to the closest animal hospital even if you fear it's too late. Staff can check for signs of life.
  2. Move your dog gently using a board, a blanket or a coat, keeping the head and spine supported, and have another person drive so you can stay beside your dog.
  3. If your dog has already died, the clinic team will confirm it and can hold your dog until you've chosen the aftercare.
  4. Ask whether the team can clean your dog up first, if seeing them that way would make the goodbye easier to bear.
  5. Choose private or communal cremation when you're ready. There's no harm in taking a day or two over it.
  6. Look after yourself and anyone who saw it happen. Losing a dog this suddenly is a shock, and it helps to talk about it, whether with a friend or on a pet loss line.

Honoring your dog after the cremation

Stockholm families make the most of Djurgården, the waterfront paths and the forests at the edge of the city, and many spend summers in the archipelago. Pets are often part of all of it, from the summer cottage to a sunny balcony in town. Many owners here ask for individual cremation so the ashes can come home or go to a place that mattered. Confirm the type of cremation in writing.

Questions people ask

Is cremation common in Sweden?

For people, yes: about 84.69%[1] of Sweden deaths end in cremation, according to Cremation Society of Great Britain, International Cremation Statistics 2023 (2023). Nobody publishes the same figure for pets, but in our experience pet choices in Stockholm follow the human pattern closely, so cremation is the default most families here start from.

Is dog cremation more common than burial in Sweden?

For people, about 84.69%[1] of deaths in Sweden end in cremation, and pet aftercare tends to follow similar habits. For dogs, cremation is now the most common choice among families who want to keep their pet close, especially in towns and suburbs.

How much does dog cremation cost in Stockholm?

Prices depend on your dog's size and whether you choose individual or communal cremation. Published prices in the UK and Europe typically range from about £150 to £300 for an individual cremation, with communal much cheaper. Ask for a written quote that lists collection and the container.

How far ahead should I book a home euthanasia in Stockholm?

Give as much notice as you can, ideally several days. In-home vets in a city like Stockholm cover wide areas, and evening and weekend slots go first. If your dog is declining quickly, call anyway; many keep a little room for urgent visits, and your regular vet may be able to help. When you book, ask whether the vet arranges the cremation afterwards or whether you need to call a crematory yourself.

Why do quotes for the same dog cremation in Stockholm vary so much?

In a large city, providers differ in overheads, whether they collect themselves or use a courier, which urn is included and whether a vet adds a fee for arranging it. Two private cremations can be identical in practice but priced very differently. Ask each provider for an itemized quote for your dog's weight, then compare the cremation line on its own.

Do I have to use the crematory my vet recommends?

No. Your vet's arrangement is convenient, but you can choose any provider that serves Stockholm and ask them to collect from the clinic. It's worth a quick comparison if you want a witnessed cremation, a particular urn or a clearer price.
